Content: Speakers will share their experiences collaborating with private sector stakeholders to develop freight plans and implement strategies to improve freight mobility.

Intended Audience: freight planners/practitioners, policymakers, consultants, researchers, and private sector freight logistics coordinators, in the U.S. and Europe/international locations.

This webinar will focus on collaborations between the public and private sector which help to create better freight planning outcomes in both the United States and European Union. Two case studies will be shared during the webinar to highlight such collaborations:

European Union Example: NOVELOG case study, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham

Tim Martin of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham will discuss his agency’s partnership with private enterprise via the EU-funded CIVITAS NOVELOG project to develop a Freight Travel Plan (FTP) that introduces more sustainable freight practices in collaboration with private shipping companies. The Borough of Barking and Dagenham (located to the East of central London) has about 165,000 inhabitants and is a focal point for significant growth and regeneration. The city experiences significant heavy goods vehicle movements and parking problems resulting in congestion and delays. Mr. Martin will discuss the Borough’s various efforts to incentivize private companies to collaborate with the city on topics such as low emissions vehicles, night deliveries, parking enforcements and cooperation schemes for services, re-timing of deliveries, and consolidation at existing facilities.

U.S. Example: Partnerships with Conexus Indiana

Conexus Vice President David Holt will discuss his organization’s unique role in organizing partnerships between private business and state and regional public agencies to improve freight mobility in Indiana. Conexus hosts several Regional Logistics Councils located throughout the state made up of high-level logistics executives in air, rail, truck, water, infrastructure, manufacturing, and warehouse/distribution. These councils convene to identify and prioritize the infrastructure investments needed to improve freight operations within their regions in coordination with public agencies. James Turnwald of the Michiana Area Council of Governments (MACOG) and Katie England from the Indiana Department of Transportation will discuss the benefits of this public-private collaboration from the public perspective.

This is the first urban freight webinar in a series. It is part of a joint EC-FHWA research & development initiative on urban freight, known as the Urban Freight R&D Twinning Initiative. The series is also a component of FHWA’s Office of Freight Management and Operations' freight professional development program. At the same time, 4 large EC-funded urban freight R&D projects and a number of other EU-based networks are involved in the EC-FHWA Twinning Initiative, including the CIVITAS Urban Freight Logistics Thematic Group, which coordinates and facilitate cooperation among the CIVITAS EC-funded urban freight and logistics projects, and with external initiatives.
