CIVITAS Deep Dive on Data in Mobility

Workshop

CIVITAS Deep Dive Data

CIVITAS Deep Dives during Urban Mobility Days 2025

Side Event (Gamma Room, Radisson Blu Hotel) – DATA IN MOBILITY
09:00-12:00 | 30 September

This concluding session of the CIVITAS Deep Dive on Data in Mobility gives participants the opportunity to present their Action Plans on data collection, use, and interpretation in the mobility field. The session will foster discussion, feedback, and knowledge sharing, offering the wider CIVITAS Community a chance to learn from real-world city challenges and innovative solutions.

This CIVITAS Deep Dive explores how data can support better mobility choices and policies. Starting with a personal journey exercise, participants reflect on mobility from a user’s perspective and are introduced to key data users: travellers, operators, and planners.

Session 1 focuses on why data matters, showcasing examples from European projects and discussing how data can guide decisions in both daily life and mobility planning. Participants will explore how they can extract the most value out of the data that is available. A mobility service operator will share how data drives their designs and operations.

Session 2 presents how mobility planners can use data and leverage it in analysing current challenges and potential solutions. The first explores how data can enhance access to shared mobility services by identifying travel patterns and user needs. The second case examines how cities can use data to improve the management and efficacy of mobility hubs, optimizing transportation networks
and services. Participants reflect on these use cases and how similar approaches can be applied in their own work.

Session 3 introduces digital twins and their potential and limitations in urban mobility. Participants learn how digital representations of cities can support planning, simulation, and stakeholder
engagement. Through hands-on exercises, they explore tools and reflect on how digital twins could be applied in their own context.

Throughout the programme, participants develop an action plan, outlining concrete steps for their own data challenge. The in-person session provides an opportunity to present the action plan,
receive feedback from peers and experts, and refine the plan.

Session Overview

Session 1 focuses on why data matters, showcasing examples from European projects and discussing how data can guide decisions in both daily life and mobility planning. Participants explore which data types are available and how they link to real-world use cases.

Session 2 presents two use cases focused on leveraging data in mobility planning. The first explores how data can enhance access to shared mobility services by identifying travel patterns and user needs. The second case examines how cities can use data to improve the management and effectiveness of mobility hubs, optimizing transportation networks and services. Participants reflect on these use cases and how similar approaches can be applied in their own work.

Session 3 introduces digital twins and their potential  and limitations in urban mobility. Participants learn how digital representations of cities can support planning, simulation, and stakeholder engagement. Through hands-on exercises, they explore tools and reflect on how digital twins could be applied in their own context.

Between sessions, targeted assignments help apply insights directly to practice. Throughout the programme, participants develop an action plan, outlining concrete steps for their own data challenge. The 4ht in-person session participants have the opportunity to present their action plan and receive feedback from peers and experts. This will provide them with an opportunity to revise and refine their plan and search for their next step.
