Velenje (Slovenia)

Velenje, located in northeastern Slovenia, is actively pursuing sustainable mobility initiatives to enhance urban transport and reduce environmental impact. The city offers free public transportation through its "Lokalc" bus service and provides complimentary use of "Bicy" city bikes, encouraging residents and visitors to opt for eco-friendly travel options. In 2022, Velenje secured EU funding exceeding €180,000 to renovate bus stops and construct cycle shelters, aiming to improve urban mobility and air quality. The municipality has also developed a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, focusing on sustainable planning, walking, cycling, public transport, and changing user habits to promote sustainable mobility. Velenje's commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated through its participation in the EU Climate-neutral and Smart Cities Mission, with a goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.
