Ungheni

Ungheni (Moldova)

Ungheni is a municipality located in the western part of Moldova, serving as the administrative center of Ungheni District. Geographically, it is situated near the Prut River, which forms the natural border between Moldova and Romania. The local economy is predominantly supported by industries such as agriculture, food processing, and light manufacturing. Ungheni is characterized by its rich cultural heritage, vibrant community life, and the presence of the iconic Ungheni Bridge that connects Moldova to Romania.

The number of cars is growing rapidly and the city can no longer cope with the high demand for personal car transport. Meanwhile, the attractiveness and viability of alternative means of transport (walking, cycling or public transport) decreases.

According to the Ungheni's urban mobility development vision, by 2030 the municipality wants to have a safe, sustainable, inclusive, well-connected and efficient transport system that ensures optimal connections between people and places, and that supports economic development and cross-border cooperation. To fulfill the vision, the following objectives were established:

1. Safe road infrastructure for all user groups

2. Comfortable, efficient, attractive and non-polluting local public transport

3.  Cycling infrastructure well-connected to intermodal hubs and points of interest

4. Safe and attractive pedestrian areas
