Province of Taranto (Italy)
The Province of Taranto is a coastal territory in southern Italy, centred on the port city of Taranto and surrounded by a լայն network of smaller municipalities. Its geography, characterised by a dispersed settlement pattern, coastal-industrial zones, and rural hinterlands, strongly shapes mobility needs.
Daily commuting flows for work, education, and services are heavily car-dependent, especially outside the urban core. A key sustainability challenge is integrating urban and extra-urban public transport across this fragmented landscape while ensuring accessibility for peripheral communities. The Province is expanding its governance role, coordinating extra-urban services and supporting urban mobility planning, with a focus on intermodality, digital solutions, and links between buses, rail, and active transport.
The Province is also involved in several European initiatives related to mobility innovation and inclusion, including projects such as Diversity in Transport and Interreg MaaS Solutions. Participation in CIVITAS is therefore seen as an opportunity to exchange experiences with other European authorities, learn from best practices and further support the development of sustainable mobility strategies in the territory.
