Ostrava (Czechia)
Ostrava has a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) and will be developing a new one over the next two years. At the same time, as a city that serves as the center of a metropolitan area connected to the TEN-T network (Ostrava is one of its hubs), we must create an agglomeration SUMP in accordance with EU regulations.
Currently, the cityās main challenge is its polycentricity and the associated problems, including those in the area of transportation. The city has one of the best and most modern public transit systems in Central Europe, and its bike-sharing system is highly developed. However, the cityās cycling infrastructure remains a challenge. A major challenge is reducing car traffic and improving the parking system, especially in the city center. Ostrava is a city where it is easy to get anywhere by car, and as a result, it remains the most widely used mode of transportation.
In the next few years, the city will undertake several major transportation infrastructure projects, some of which are quite complex and will affect both city traffic and residents themselves. These include, for example, the extension of a tram line and the covering of one of the main roads in the city center. These and other projects require significant resident participation. However, the city has extensive experience in this area, and public participation is one of the main principles of Ostrava's development.
