Nicosia (Cyprus)

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus located near the island’s geographic centre on the Mesaoria Plain along the Pedieos River, faces unique sustainability and mobility challenges due to its historic walled core, post-1974 division and sprawling modern suburbs, which increase car dependency and congestion. Planners are advancing a Strategic Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the wider metropolitan area, with consultations completed in 2024 to prioritise low-speed zones, traffic calming, enhanced bus priority measures, cycling networks and controlled parking to improve access and reduce emissions by 2030.

Public transport infrastructure is also being upgraded, including a major modernisation of the central bus station with a shift to electric buses to encourage modal shift away from private vehicles. In addition, Nicosia participates in the EIT Urban Mobility ā€œRAPTORā€ innovation programme to co-develop advanced solutions for sustainable urban mobility.
