Muğla (Türkiye)

Muğla, in southwestern Türkiye, faces significant mobility challenges due to its large geographic area and highly dispersed settlement pattern. These pressures are intensified with tourism, as the population can increase up to fivefold, particularly in coastal districts such as Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye. According to the Muğla Transportation Master Plan (2019), private cars dominate the modal split (over 41%), followed by public transport and service vehicles.

The municipality aims to develop an integrated, accessible and low-carbon transport system that reduces dependence on fossil fuels while ensuring equitable mobility. Key challenges include seasonal congestion, high emissions, long inter-district travel distances, and limited cycling and pedestrian infrastructure due to topography and underinvestment.

Through its “Transport Transformation” strategy, Muğla has begun modernising public transport and improving accessibility. Future priorities include strengthening public transport, expanding active and shared mobility, and integrating smart transport solutions, while preserving the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
