Elbasan (Albania)
Elbasan, one of Albania’s largest cities, is located in central Albania along the Shkumbin River, between mountainous areas and the Myzeqe Plain. Its strategic position on major national transport corridors makes it an important regional hub, but also generates significant traffic and mobility pressures. The municipality covers a large territory that includes both a compact urban centre and extensive rural areas, creating challenges for providing efficient and sustainable transport connections.
The city is actively pursuing a more sustainable mobility model through initiatives that prioritise walking, cycling and public transport. Recent projects include the Sustainable Urban Transport Initiative (SUTi), which focuses on expanding infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, and the eCIM (Elbasan Climate-Neutral Innovation in Mobility) project, which is testing bicycle lanes, smart crossings and pedestrian-friendly public spaces. The municipality is also developing an E-Mobility Strategy to reduce pollution and encourage cleaner transport options. These measures form part of Elbasan’s broader ambition to become a more climate-neutral, accessible and liveable city.
