Study Tour - Smart mobility solutions for public transport operators

COIMBRA, Belgium

Study tour

CIVITAS VANGUARD organised this study tour together with CIVITAS MODERN to support CIVITAS Plus cities. We invited you to the study tour hosted in Coimbra in November 2012. The study tour sought to showcase and discuss how a municipal public transportation operator in a medium size city could contribute to improving urban mobility, by implementing measures that look to promote smarter and more sustainable public transport.

There were 5 measures presented in this study tour:

• Visit and testing PT Driving Simulator: The simulator allows for improving the training given to bus drivers and trolley car drivers. It lowers costs and improves results, namely by reducing the number of traffic accidents and pollution • Visit the Info-mobility Centre: The Centre integrates all the regional transport operators (road and rail) and provides information based on a set of useful web-based products for both residents and visitors aiming to travel inside the Coimbra metropolitan region, guaranteeing the fastest, most economic and sustainable means of travel. The Centre hosts all the regional bus operators and national rail service, allowing for the sale of tickets and services for all the operators in one single place. • Seminar and technical demonstration on Hydro-electricity: assesses the possibility of generating local electricity from a renewable source at the University of Coimbra. This seminar showcases the CIVITAS study for generating the electricity needed for the Coimbra trolley car and electric minibuses PT services in the existing local river dam. • Demonstration of new e-ticketing system: The new e-ticketing system allows for greater integration and interoperability of mobility products and services, as well as more opportunities for drivers to manage ticket fares. • Visit to GPS/GPRS Operation Support System and Passenger Information System: The Operation Support System allows for the municipal PT operator to track and manage its bus fleet and simultaneously offer more and better PT information to the general public.
