Projects

Advancing knowledge and practice for sustainable urban mobility

CIVITAS projects span three types, which systematically feed into and complement each other. Read more about these and access the pages of ongoing and past projects below. Current CIVITAS projects are funded under the EU's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme, with future projects to be funded under Horizon Europe.

Through these projects, cities test and develop an integrated and complementary set of sustainable urban mobility measures, which work together to meet ambitious mobility goals. These measures are evaluated to demonstrate the extent of their potential and impacts. Since CIVITAS began in 2002, more than 800 measures have been implemented in over 80 cities through these projects.

CIVITAS research projects establish new knowledge or explore the feasibility of a new or improved technology, product, process, service or solution. They use a variety of methods and engage interdisciplinary partners to discover new mobility innovation.

They typically focus on the following:

  • The technical feasibility of cleaner, better transport options for cities;
  • Basic and applied research;
  • The development and integration of technology; and,
  • Testing and validation in small-scale demonstrations or pilot activities.

Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs) support cross-project coordination, serve as exchange mechanisms and facilitate capacity building – whether for research or Living Lab projects, or focused on certain thematic areas.
