Redesigning collective travel in the Aberdeen City Region

The transport network of the Aberdeen City Region (ACR) is in a period of transformational change, underpinned by significant investment at local, regional and national levels.

Its involvement in CIVITAS PORTIS is helping drive forward this shift towards sustainability.

Recently completed infrastructure work includes the new Park and Ride site at Craibstone, which is located on the major A96 transport corridor; the Aberdeen to Inverness Rail Improvement project; and the reopening of Kintore Station.

As part of PORTIS, a study has been undertaken by NESTRANS, a Regional Transport Partnership for Aberdeen City and Shire, on how different Park and Ride sites can continue to be improved as attractive options to replace private vehicle travel to and from the city. A number of options are now being investigated by transport officers through the North East Scotland Bus Quality Partnership.

PORTIS measures have also prompted Aberdeen to investigate travel planning in the North and South Dee areas situated near Aberdeen Harbour.

This has identified issues in these areas that currently prevent employees from taking active or sustainable transport options to the workplace. Using this knowledge, the local authority is developing an action plan.

Potential 'quick wins' include producing information to better promote sustainable transport options to commuters, as well as raising awareness of “Liftshare,” a community network that matches individuals looking to carpool, and “Co-Wheels”, a pay-as-you-go sharing service that offers vehicles for rental at locations around Aberdeen. Some of these are set aside for council employee use.

Through PORTIS, Aberdeen is also developing a smart journey planning tool to promote more active and sustainable travel and reduce the number and use of private vehicles. As it develops, this tool is envisaged to become a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) solution, offering more flexible mobility services.

Looking to the future, a new road hierarchy and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan outline priorities for mobility developments.

Overall, Aberdeen City Region is undertaking and developing a number of transport solutions to increase collective transport, which in turn is anticipated to reap social, economic and environmental benefits.
