The Final Conference of CEDR Call 2015 “User Needs in a Multimodal Context” will take place on May 9 in Brussels, Belgium, with a pre-conference evening event on May 8.
- "Modal choice in a multimodal transport system" is the title of the CEDR conference on 9 May that concludes the STTRIDE and ISAAC projects. The conference will demonstrate the new tools to understand the impact of new technologies, walking and cycling measures on modal choice and on road safety.
- A pre-conference evening including a movie projection at Cinéma Vendôme will take place on 8 May, 17.30-21.30h. "Why we cycle" (56min) will set the scene for a discussion with panelists and the audience. Enjoy this networking opportunity alongside some drinks and food.
Earlier on 8 May, Polis hosts a working group meeting for its member cities and regions bringing active travel and road safety together. This meeting is only open to Polis members.
The aim of the conference is to build knowledge and guidance on how to promote multimodality in the transport system. The conference will consider the following questions:
- What are transport users’ needs, and what are their motives for choosing different transport modes?
- What is the impact of transport interventions on modal shift?
The conference provides training on the new tools developed by the two projects. The STTRIDE tools help to understand the impact of new technologies, while the ISAAC tools focus on measures supporting walking and cycling and their impact on modal choice and on road safety.

The ISAAC project develops evidence-based recommendations to achieve modal shift in favour of walking and cycling - without compromising road safety, social security and comfort.
ISAAC brings together research findings and expertise from relevant disciplines including health and care, environment, transport and urban planning and traffic safety.

ISAAC developed tools that help administrations to identify the most effective and appropriate road safety measures for their city. The tools consist of an interactive checklist and guidelines for local and regional policy makers.

The instrument advises based on local conditions; on current travel patterns and modal split, road safety, the road environment, population and policy ambitions. Implementation costs are also considered in the recommendations. The guide will provide tailored suggestions for appropriate interventions, considering several characteristics of cities, their ambitions and target groups related to modal shift.
ISAAC tools will be available in 2018.
Involvement of cities
The draft checklist and guideline will be reviewed and discussed with stakeholders from a number of European cities to test its user-friendliness, its practicality, and its usefulness in different conditions.
