Clean Buses: Map of resources, projects and city experiences

CIVITAS has recently released its new Policy Note  “Smart choices for cities - Clean buses for your city”. The 50 pages document gives in-depth background information to make a decision on which bus to choose.

Drivers and challenges that influence municipalities to look at ‘cleaner’ bus options are defined. For five main energy carriers available in the market today the Policy Note identifies the available and most promising bus technologies. It compares the most promising bus technologies with respect to operational characteristics, pollutants and GHG emissions, costs, maturity and finally it discusses how to take decisions on costefficiency of clean(er) public transport today, keeping in mind both EU short term 2020 and long term 2050 targets.

Scope of this collaborative interaction is to collect further resources, links to other projects, practical city experiences and obviously opinions and comments on the topic.

CIVITAS Demonstrations

Ljubljana’s public transport operator LPP purchased 20 methane buses and 5 hybrid midi-buses, after it has tested several different types of vehicles. In Italy, the city of Monza completed a preliminary study and tested an IVECO Citelis Hybrid bus in 2011. Bologna purchased two hybrid buses Van Hool NV for a total investment of 700,000 Euros, partially co-financed by the CIVITAS MIMOSA project. The two EEV serial-hybrid buses are equipped with innovative super capacitors that replace conventional electric batteries.

The city of Brescia (Italy) completed a large investment for the renewal of its public transport fleet: 28 CNG buses of different length have been purchased and tested as well as 4 hybrid methane gas-electric minibuses. The action was complemented by the new photovoltaic system to power hybrid buses. In Ghent (Belgium), the PT operator De Lijn introduced 20 new energy-efficient and innovative articulated low floor hybrid buses (type AG300H) whereas in Bath (UK) the type of hybrid diesel-electric bus was a double deck.

Demonstrations on hybrid buses are going further within the current CIVITAS editions in Aachen (Germany) and Palma (Spain). The latter is also testing new CNG buses. The City of Koprivnica (Croatia) will purchase two electricminibuses and set up electric charging stations for the buses.

Biodiesel at high blends has been tested by CTSS, the urban public transport company of Donostia-San Sebastián (Spain). A mixing/filling station was purchased and implemented. At the end of the demonstration period 95 out of 120 buses are running on a B-30 blend, 15 buses with B-50 and 6 buses with B-100. Also within the measure, part of the bus fleet was replaced by new EEV vehicles. Now there are 31 EEV buses fully operational on the urban routes, including 1 fully operative hybrid bus.

Zagreb (Croatia) purchased a total of 160 clean fuels and energy efficient buses: 100 biodiesel and 60 CNG. All the new buses are labelled with CIVITAS stickers. Iasi (Romania) modified 30 vehicles in the PTI bus fleet to operate on bio-methane. SMTUC, the public transportation operator in Coimbra (Portugal), has tested different mixes of biodiesel in four buses under real operating conditions. The hypothetical introduction of B30 in the entire SMTUC bus fleet could represent savings in operating costs around 420.000 €/year and the replacement of approximately 268.000 litres of diesel.

Brno (Czech Republic) tested and purchased three electric minibuses for the new line in the historic city centre. The city is now implementig within CIVITAS 2MOVE2 a measure for achieving energy-efficiency in its tram and trolleybus networks.

Trolleybuses are a key component of the Gdynia (Poland) strategy within CIVITAS DYN@MO: the PT operator is currently testing super capacitors and li-ion hybrid batteries on a new trolley line.
