Dynamic real-time bus and tram information

The measure focused on prototyping an interface between the Public Transport Operation Control Centre and the dynamic passenger information system in Berlin in order to make local public transport more attractive and competitive.

Implementing sustainable mobility

Equipping public transport with dynamic real-time information improves the quality of the service and is an important step in creating a shift in modal split towards public transport. Dynamic information systems complete or replace traditional static information systems, such as timetables, which are only able to provide information about planned departures, rather than disruptions. The systems help passengers to orientate themselves when changing means of transport and help them to react in the event of disturbances.

The measure aimed at expanding Berlin Transport Corporation’s dynamic passenger enquiry and information system (DAISY) from underground to surface public transport, enabling tram and bus users to get information about the actual departure of the next two to five trams and buses, as well as changes in services.

Increased quality of service and greater customer satisfaction and loyalty ultimately lead to increased use of public transport and a shift in modal share away from private cars in favour of public transport.

How did the measure progress?

The new dynamic passenger information system used the available hardware and software of the Oracle database distribution server. Extensive tests were carried out and the first six panels appeared at tram stops in November 2003.

What were the outcomes of the measure?

In total, 100 information panels were installed at 40 tram stops and four bus stops. The panel displays the line number, destination and real departure time (in xx minutes), with an additional line for extra information.  Journey conditions were improved as a result of reducing the uncertainty and discomfort of waiting for public transport vehicles.
