Creating new infrastructure for walking and cycling

The environmental and health benefits of walking and cycling can only be promoted in an urban setting if people feel sufficiently safe when using non-motorised modes of transportation.

Implementing sustainable mobility

As a way of tackling high levels of pollution and increasing congestion, Ploiesti aimed to construct new facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, improving accessibility, security, and connections between routes and modes.

Where cycling paths are to be created, specific signage needs to beset up at every point at which cycling paths cross the main road in order to inform car drivers about the existence of the cycle route, and cyclists about the street layout. Bicycle route infrastructure includes the provision of parking spaces for bicycles with racks for secure bike parking.

The specific goals were to:

  • design 8 km of cycle paths and 4.3 km of pedestrian zones; and
  • improve links, accessibility and services on the cycle and walking paths.


How did the measure progress?

The main stages in the measure were:

  • the elaboration of a feasibility study;
  • public consultations;
  • technical specifications;
  • the installation of pedestrian and cycling facilities; and
  • a promotional campaign to encourage positive changes in attitudes and travel behaviour.  

What were the outcomes of the measure?

The measure led to:

  • the creation of the first real cycling and walking spaces, with designed and improved facilities;
  • improved accessibility to the city centre;
  • a higher proportion of alternative transport modes within the modal split; and
  • reduced pollution and traffic congestion.
