CIVITAS ECCENTRIC webinars

Living in the city without a car and travelling sustainably in an easy and accessible way? Cities can make this possible by installing mobility stations.

The City of Munich, like so many European cities, is seeing new housing development and new residential areas growing. The city wants to move away from the usual one parking spot per housing unit regulation, freeing up public space for other uses and supporting its citizens in making sustainable mobility choices at the same time.

As part of the EU-funded CIVITAS ECCENTRIC project Munich has set up several mobility stations. Mobility stations combine and provide a number of mobility services to ensure that suitable means of transport are available for any purpose at any time and offer a real alternative to car ownership.

What does a city need to consider when developing mobility stations? How to get the public on board with these new plans? Which results can be expected? During this practitioner’s webinar, the City of Munich shared its experience and dove into the lessons learned. The webinar was held on April 7th 2020.

GECKO webinars

This webinar from the GECKO project looked at e-scooter regulation, with presentations by Marco Lietz from Circ, providing the operator perspective, and Michael Glotz-Richter from the City of Bremen, providing the city perspective. Both points of view highlighted the mutual importance of open dialogue between cities and e-scooter operators to determine what is feasible and how e-scooters can provide a solution for local issues.

The presentation from Marco Lietz addressed how the industry has evolved as both the number of riders and the number of cities with e-scooters have expanded. A focus on safety, harmony with other modes, and integration with local infrastructure are important factors to ensuring the sustainability of e-scooters in cities.

Michael’s presentation of Bremen’s thoroughly-considered approach to the introduction of e-scooters to the city indicates that regulations such as a limited number of scooters, no-parking zones, and no-riding zones are useful, and that prior cycle-friendliness in a city helps facilitate a smooth integration of these new two-wheeled vehicles.

Based on the high level of interest and number of questions and comments from the audience, it is clear that the discussion of e-scooter regulations is far from over.

CIVITAS webinars

On Tuesday 19th November 2019, the H2020 project CoEXist and Civitas held a joint webinar on automation-ready transport modelling tools. The speakers addressed the question: How to include Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) in traffic flow and transport demand simulations?

The overall aim of CoEXist is to prepare the transition phase during which automated and conventional vehicles will co-exist on cities’ roads and to make local authorities “automation-ready”.

CoEXist defines the concept of “automation-readiness” as: “The capability of making structured and informed decisions about the deployment of CAVs in a mixed road environment.”

The webinar guides the audience through the new functionalities of the automation-ready modelling tools to understand the benefits of such functionalities.

It is explained how automated vehicles could be modelled at a microscopic scale the operation of CAVs in platoons as well as at the macroscopic level, including the impacts of CAVs on transport demand and traffic time performance.

STARS webinars

After examining the current status and available business models of car sharing in the EU in the first STARS project webinar, the second one sees STARS results discussed from the perspective of local authorities.

Local authorities have the power to influence urban mobility and car sharing implementation through policies and stakeholder engagement.

The speakers address some of the important components of car sharing that could ease the implementation of car sharing at the local level.

CIVITAS ECCENTRIC webinars

The second CIVITAS ECCENTRIC thematic webinar looked at the topic of inclusion of peripheral neighbourhoods in Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).

This topic is crucial, but remains largely unexplored. Suburban areas have remained largely unaddressed in terms of dealing with high demand for passenger and freight traffic.

Moreover, due to increasingly high urban centre developments, additional pressure hast been imposed on suburban areas, which then face specific challenges of:

  • Becoming sufficiently appealing to avoid an unnecessary traffic flow towards the city centre;
  • Providing sustainable and high quality mobility options to enable and encourage car independent lifestyles; and
  • Planning the urban future according to carbon neutral mobility principles.
This webinar from CIVITAS ECCENTRIC shines light on these vital factors.

CIVITAS webinars

In this webinar, the key components of the CIVITAS evaluation process are discussed. Dirk Engels, Transport and Mobility Leuven, presents the key elements of this innovative approach.

This centres on conducting both process and impact evaluations. By doing so, it is possible to understand the barriers to and drivers of a measure's implementation, as well as the effect that it has.

Through its six impact categories, the CIVITAS approach tells the full story of mobility measures, one that extends beyond pure facts and figures.

STARS webinars

Launched in October 2017 and standing for Shared mobility opporTunities And challenges foR European citieS, STARS aims to explore the diffusion of car sharing in Europe, its connections with technological and social innovations, and its impact on other transport modes.   In the first STARS webinar, the project results so far were introduced:
  • Typologies and characteristics of car sharing in Europe;
  • Analysis of business models of car sharing services across Europe; and
  • Socio-economic factors and mobility styles of car sharing users.
Five of the seven STARS Uptake cities were also introduced. They will follow the project and be engaged in certain knowledge transfer activities.

CIVITAS SUNRISE Webinars

Zaragoza Logistics Center (ZLC), project partners of CIVITAS SUNRISE, organised a webinar on how to adapt Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) to the neighbourhood level.

The points addressed were:

  • What is a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP)?
  • Benefits
  • Process of a SUMP: from step 1 to 11
  • Good practices examples
  • Q/A round

Key take away: Integrating not only passengers but also freight in the SUMP development decreases noise, emissions and congestion in the neighbourhoods, improves road safety, enhances business economic development, and improves the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the transportation of goods.

CIVITAS ECCENTRIC webinar

Vulnerable groups such as children, older people, or people with disabilities depend on public transportation and accessible public space to stay mobile. Women are also more regular users of public transport than men.

Therefore, sustainable urban mobility planning needs to provide inclusive and accessible means of mobility for all of these groups.

The first CIVITAS ECCENTRIC thematic webinar offered insights from mobility planners and practitioners into different aspects of the topic:

  • Solutions and mobility measures addressing gender issues;
  • Improving walkability for all;
  • Offering better mobility for children and the elderly.

The city of Umeå (Sweden), host of the CIVITAS Forum 2018, shared their experiences of addressing gender issues in their city.

CIVITAS PROSPERITY Webinars

This webinar demystifyed monitoring and evaluation in SUMPs, explaining in simple terms what to measure and how, and how to set meaningful targets, giving real life examples from actual SUMPs.  The overall message was that monitoring and evaluation is simpler than you might expect and does not always require gathering large amounts of data.
