SOLUTIONS

Many cities strive for a cleaner vehicle fleet in the city. Electric vehicles (EVs) are one of the favorite options, as they produce zero exhaust emission. This e-learning course will provide an introduction to EVs and provide guidance on how to increase the use of EVs in urban environments. Options to foster EV deployment and examples from cities around the world are provided.

SOLUTIONS

This course consists of 6 units. It offers an overview of design of urban streets (sharing of road space) and the design for the cycling infrastructure improving the safety of infrastructure. We've tried to keep the course concrete and hands-on; each unit has a homework task that involves examining and researching your own local context or looking at examples from other places to see how they might apply to your context.

SOLUTIONS

This course aims at presenting solutions to the main problems of city logistics: traffic congestion, pollution and noise, labor and safety issues and, last but not least, enhancing the quality of urban transport services for the clients and the economy. The solutions proposed here have been described in 'SOLUTIONS training kit- Cluster 3 City logistics' available on the SOLUTIONS web site.

UNITAR webinar series

TRANSFORuM

Summary of the stakeholder-driven roadmap towards the White Paper goal on Long-distance Freight: "Thirty per cent of road freight over 300 km should shift to other modes such as rail or waterborne transport by 2030, and more than 50 % by 2050, facilitated by efficient and green freight corridors. To meet this goal will also require appropriate infrastructure to be developed."

TRANSFORuM

Proposed measures, actions and milestones towards the White Paper goal on urban mobility: "Halve the use of ‘conventionally fuelled’ cars in urban transport by 2030; phase them out in cities by 2050. Achieve essentially CO2-free city logistics in major urban centres by 2030."

The Transport White paper also contains one goal about high-speed rail: "By 2050, complete a European high-speed rail network. Triple the length of the existing high-speed rail network by 2030 and maintain a dense railway network in all Member States. By 2050 the majority of medium-distance passenger transport should go by rail." This package provides a summary of the related stakeholder-driven TRANSFORuM roadmap.

TIDE: Electric mobility

Electric vehicles in the logistics sector are a matter for the private sector. But does this mean there is nothing a city can do to encourage electric delivery vehicles? This course addresses the question of how cities can work with the private sector and what role the public sector can/should play in encouraging and supporting further electrification in the logistics sector.

TIDE: New pricing measures

Both parking prices and parking problems vary greatly among cities, but no city is entirely free of parking challenges. Charging for something that was previously free can be an unpopular, but necessary, decision for a city to take. Using examples from cities that have successfully implemented new parking pricing schemes, this course will address issues such as: How can you increase citizen acceptance of a new (or higher) parking charge? Is it fair to make drastic changes in transport conditions? How do you find the “correct” level of charging? And what is the role of enforcement in parking pricing?
