ELIPTIC Webinar series

ELIPTIC’s use cases have shown how existing electric public transport infrastructure (trolleybus, metro and tram sub-stations) could be used as charging infrastructure for other electric vehicles such as e-buses, pedelecs, e-cars/ taxis, e-vans and e-utility trucks. For the safe operation of this multi-purpose infrastructure, different approaches were made use of taking into account infrastructure and vehicle types as well as local context conditions, such as energy capacities of the grid, the institutional set-up and regulatory frameworks.

In the 3rd and final ELIPTIC webinar, which took place on 9 April 2018 from 11:00 to 12:30 CET, we presented some of the lessons learnt within the project related to the topic of using electric public transport infrastructure for the charging of other e-vehicles. After a short introduction into the work of the ELIPTIC project and the use cases related to the webinar’s topic (Henning Günter, Rupprecht Consult), the presenters showed different aspects related to the multi-purpose use of electric public transport infrastructure. This included direct insights from two ELIPTIC cities covering both technical aspects in the provision of metro infrastructure for the charging of TfL’s service vehicles (David Talbot, TfL) and planning aspects that need to be taken into consideration when using Barcelona’s metro and tram network for the charging of e-cars (Oscar Puigdollers, B:SM). A final presentation gave insight into the findings looking at e-mobility from an energy law perspective highlighting legal and regulatory challenges that were encountered within the project (Hartwig von Bredow, von Bredow Valentin Herz).

ELIPTIC Webinar Series

Simulation tools help public authorities in the planning of e-bus systems and electrification of their fleets. They are an integral part of the work in the use cases of Pillar A “Safe integration of e-Buses using existing electric public transport infrastructure” of the ELIPTIC project. After a short introduction into the work of the ELIPTIC project and the use cases related to the webinar’s topic, the presenters from the research organisations RWTH Aachen, Fraunhofer IVI and Vrije Universiteit Brussel showed different aspects of simulation that help in the planning of e-buses. This included the presentation of a software-based approach to find the optimal technical configuration for the use of e-buses on different routes by Fabian Meishner, RWTH Aachen. These calculations are a helpful tool to build sound business cases for the long-term use of electric bus systems. An example was also given of the results of a vehicle simulation-based feasibility study of converting a Diesel bus line with hybrid trolleybuses (by extending the existing trolleybus line) in a rural area in the East of Germany (Dr.-Ing Thoralf Knote, Fraunhofer IVI). Hybrid trolleybuses have an on-board energy storage which enables a fully electric operation without catenaries. Finally, the webinar addressed design questions and charging strategies for e-buses, exemplified in the case of Brussels (Prof. Dr. Omar Hegazy, Vrije Universiteit Brussel).

SUTP Webinar

Tackling transport challenges is crucial for sustainable urban development. Transforming urban transport systems towards being inclusive, safe, clean and low-carbon requires multiple and comprehensive action of a wide range of stakeholders. This has been recognized by the Paris Agreement and the NDC’s in which many countries dedicatedly focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions of urban transport. The Agenda 2030 includes the target to improve the access to urban transport in the urban SDG 11 whereas other targets on air pollution, road safety, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction require particular attention to urban transport. Further, theNew Urban Agenda will outline the responsibilities and necessary steps to empower cities and local governments to realize their ambitions on improving urban mobility and reducing the negative impact of transport in urban areas. In the webinar, Cornie Huizenga, Secretary General of the Sustainable Low Carbon Transport Partnership (SLoCaT) and Oliver Lah (Wuppertal Institute, Member of the Habitat III Policy Unit 9 on Urban Services and Technology) provide an overview on urban mobility in the global climate agreement, the Agenda 2030 as well as up-to-date insights into the current work of the Habitat III Policy Units whose work is decisive for shaping the New Urban Agenda.

ELIPTIC webinar series

Braking energy recovery technologies are an opportunity to increase the energy efficiency in public transport systems like metro, light rail/tram or trolleybus networks and will be presented during this first webinar of the ELIPTIC project (link is external). Different technologies in this field are part of the work in the use cases of Pillar B “Innovative energy storage systems to increase operational efficiency” of the ELIPTIC project. After a short introduction into the work of the ELIPTIC project and the objectives and use cases related to the webinar’s topic, the presenters from the public transport companies STIB (Brussels, Belgium) and PKT (Gdynia, Poland) will show braking energy recovery technologies for metro (and how to transfer the approach to light rail) and trolleybus systems. They will explain their development background from the European projects Ticket to Kyoto (NWE Interreg) and CIVITAS-DYN@MO, and show experiences with their systems in operation as well as results in terms of increased operational efficiency through these systems. Furthermore, they will present how their current braking energy recovery approaches and technologies will be developed further in the ELIPTIC use cases.

SOLUTIONS

Today, many trips that are carried out using conventional cars could be done by light electric vehicles (LEVs). This would make urban transport much more sustainable. Emissions would “evaporate”, congestion would be reduced, transport would become safer, quieter and cheaper and public health would improve. Overall, replacement of car trips by LEV trips would make our cities much more liveable.

SOLUTIONS Training Kit

The main point to address in ‘city logistics’ is how to respond to freight requirements while decreasing environmental and social impacts. The ultimate goal being to decrease the flows of commercial road vehicles without increasing other flows like consumer car flows, to decrease commercial vehicles’ emissions and to prevent traffic congestion caused by vans and lorries double-parking during delivery. SOLUTIONS will look at policy options for public authorities to achieve these goals, including regulations (traffic restriction, low emissions zones), transport pricing and taxes, transport planning and the development of infrastructure dedicated to urban freight (lorry lanes, delivery and loading spaces, urban consolidation centres). Public authorities and private operators, both of whom have an interest in improving their vehicle fuel efficiency, consolidating of urban freight, and improving the efficiency of deliveries, have to work together to define the best urban freight schemes.
