CIVITAS SUMPs-Up eCourses

The third CIVITAS SUMPs-Up e-course focuses on how to ensure that sustainable urban mobility planning is a strategic long-term process. The SUMP should not be seen as yet another plan that. SUMP should have clear objectives and a set of SMART targets that have been selected based on the vision for mobility. It should be planned carefully how it will be measured whether the targets are being as well as the evaluation of the planning process itself.

SUMP should be also integrated with other related processes. How to harmonize SUMP with strategies of alike sectors in order to reach an integrated perspective for sustainable cities, how to create links between transport, energy and pollution reduction when planning, and what are the benefits are crucial aspects in the SUMP development which planners should not overlook. To ensure successful implementation of SUMPs necessary resources should be secured and risks and mitigation strategies identified. Finally, “quick-win” measures that help to gain political commitment should be identified.

CIVITAS SUMPs-Up eCourses

The second CIVITAS SUMPs-Up e-course focuses on the importance of co-creating the process and the plan together with different stakeholders.  It gives advice on how to elaborate a public participation and communication strategy and how to integrate participation in the overall process. The course presents concrete examples of methods and tools that can be used in workshops and events with different stakeholder groups.

Developing a common vision with citizens and other interest groups is a crucial start of the SUMP process. It creates ownership and acceptance, when citizens´ ideas and view point are taken into account. Using the community´s knowledge can provide valuable input for the city administration in developing their SUMP.

CIVITAS SUMPs-Up eCourses

The first CIVITAS SUMPs-Up e-course focuses on the phase preparing well in the SUMP cycle. It gives advice how to initiate the SUMP process. Before elaborating a SUMP strategy and selecting the right measures it is important to understand the local, regional and national framework influencing the SUMP preparation and implementation as well as to analyse the current mobility situationand planning practices.

Cooperation and participation are one of the main principles of Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning. The course gives advice what should be taken into account when setting-up a project management structure and gives tips how to map different urban mobility stakeholders that should be involved and promote cooperation across sectors and borders.

CIVITAS essentials

When considering the quality of urban mobility decisions, most CIVITAS cities involve a wide range of stakeholders in the measure development process. Through consultations, local communities are empowered and get a sense of ownership of results. At the same time, the level of interaction between decision makers and the target of their decisions is substantially increased, thus enhancing measure completeness, giving stakeholders a better understanding of the planned mobility measures and reducing later opposition to urban mobility. Involving the public has added value, but where to start? In this e-course we explain what public involvement is and why you should involve the public and stakeholders. Step by step, we show you an approach for public participation, including evaluation. After completing this e-course, you will be able to design your own participation process.
E-course was developed in cooperation with Mobiel 21.

There are over 500 urban vehicle access regulations (UVARs) in Europe, controlling entry of vehicles to an area of a town or city. They are implemented to improve the quality of life in towns and cities. Often ‘soft measures’ to improve the situation can only go so far, and UVARs are needed in combination with the soft measures.

In order to reduce motorised traffic, people will have to adopt a less car-dependent lifestyle. To manage this shift in mentality and behaviour, cities need to promote new forms of transport use and ownership. Car sharing is one way to reduce motorized traffic and carbon emissions and make a valuable contribution to more sustainable urban mobility. This e-course provides an introduction into the concept of car sharing in a variety of forms as well as experiences of different cities that already have implemented a car sharing scheme.

Shared mobility or shared transportation such as bike and carsharing has grown impressively in recent years. Shared mobility is situated within the broader context of the so-called ‘sharing economy’. This comes in many shapes: from real-estate sharing, to property sharing to transportation sharing. This e-course provides a general introduction into the concept of shared mobility. It sets the broad context, explaining the motives and benefits, and illustrates that shared mobility is actually more than bike and car-sharing. There are specific e-courses both for bike-sharing and for car-sharing where these particular types of shared mobility are covered in more depth.

E-course was developed in cooperation with Mobiel 21.

“Gamification is the process of taking something that already exists - a website, an enterprise application, an online community - and integrating game mechanics into it to motivate participation, engagement, and loyalty. Gamification takes the data-driven techniques that game designers use to engage players, and applies them to non-game experiences to motivate actions that add value to your business.” Gamification is used in more and more in the transport sector to influence choice behaviour.
