Welcome to the Urban Nodes course on how to improve the efficiency of the transport system in an urban node of the TEN-T core network!

This course consists of 4 units. It offers an overview of the urban node concept and its benefits, describes the ever-growing importance of urban nodes in the TEN-T context, looks at the methods to assess the most cost-efficient transport measures and presents four case studies and their evaluation experience.

We have tried to keep the course concrete and hands-on; each unit has a homework task that guides you through the assessment process in your local context. This will involve examining and researching your own local context or looking at examples from other places to see how they might apply to your context.

You will have the opportunity to exchange knowledge with course participants from other urban nodes and to share ideas with them through the course forum. We (Susanne Böhler-Baedeker and Ana-Maria Baston, the course moderators) will join the discussion on the forum regularly, offering comments, questions and feedback.

Fare collection systems are a hot topic in the transit industry, due to a number of new and exciting technologies emerging and gaining adoption. However, these changes also make it harder to predict the future and get a good grasp on where the industry is heading.

In this webinar our expert panel reviewed the range of ticketing trends taking place and we heard first hand from transport operators tackling these issues head on.

  • Is the Future of Ticketing Account Based?
  • Fare Collection Trends: Issued Ticked Media vs Passenger Owned (BYOT)
  • EMV Contactless vs Mobile Ticketing: Which One is Best?
  • Mobile Ticketing Technologies: Barcode, vs SMS, vs NFC, vs Bluetooth.
  • Mobile First and Mobile Ticketing 2.0
  • Preston Bus Case Study: Speeding up Bus Services by 9 Seconds per Passenger
  • Keolis Case Study: Seamless door-to-door journeys

Technology developments make possible a new generation of on-demand / flexible public transport services, more cost-effective and better tailored to market circumstances than prior offerings. Such services targeted at the general public — for both first mile / last mile access and local circulation purposes — have been deployed in 22 service zones by the Denver transit agency in the largest implementation to date in the USA. The technology platform for managing these services, MobilityDR, is key to this outcome.

In this webinar, DemandTrans Solutions and its partners show how an appropriate technology platform in combination with innovative service concepts provides regional transit authorities with the ability to configure, control, and operate cost-effective DRT / flexible transit services.

CIVITAS

When considering the quality of urban mobility decisions, most CIVITAS cities involve a wide range of stakeholders in the measure development process. Through consultations, local communities are empowered and get a sense of ownership of results. At the same time, the level of interaction between decision makers and the target of their decisions is substantially increased, thus enhancing measure completeness, giving stakeholders a better understanding of the planned mobility measures and reducing later opposition to urban mobility. Involving the public has added value, but where to start?

In this e-course we explain what public involvement is and why you should involve the public and stakeholders. Step by step, we show you an approach for public participation, including evaluation.

SUTP Webinar

Cycling has the capability to contribute substantially to livable cities. It has seen a massive boost in popularity all over the world during the last years. This has mainly been due to grass-roots initiatives, spreading a bicycle culture to places that used to be dominated by cars - with powerful impact: The “Bike Revolution” is shaping cities with their action and pushes urban and transport planners to consider their needs in future development. This local Engagement becomes more and more important on a global agenda as well. In October, Habitat-III will take place in Quito. The New Urban Agenda (NUA), the outcome document of the conference, has the ambition to set out universal guidelines for forward-looking urban development. Hence, embedding bicycle culture in the NUA is crucial to establish and underline its importance for sustainable mobility in cities worldwide. In the webinar JP Amaral (Bike Anjo, Brazil), and Ksenia Semenova (Kyiv Cyclists’ Association, Ukraine, and vice-president of the European Cyclists Federation) highlight the experiences of the bike revolutions in their cities and countries. Furthermore, Marcio Deslandes (European Cyclists Federation) will demonstrate how the HABITAT-III process is linked to this local engagement and present their work on the role of cycling in the New Urban Agenda.

Eurotransport webinars

This webinar consisted of a conversation with James Mellor, Head of Commercial at Arriva North West / Arriva Buses Wales, and Jessica Sweeney, Senior Director of Market & Product Strategy at LILEE Systems. They discussed the transformation of operations and passenger services through the application of innovative technology for real-time broadband communications. James and Jessica examined how to turn the Passenger Wi-Fi paradigm on its head to address the issues that riders care the most about.

Competition drives innovation to deliver a superior, exceptional passenger experience. This innovation comes in many forms – technology, data sharing, and interoperable collaboration – and ultimately provides a significant competitive advantage to fleet operators, whether they carry employees to work or commuters to the next stop.

In this webinar, LILEE Systems outlined how to rise to the challenges of today’s transportation market – how to convert highly mobile IoT data into actionable insights, improve security and how to launch new revenue-generating passenger services.
