CIVITAS e-course

The Urban Nodes e-course is about how to improve the efficiency of the transport system in an urban node of the Trans-European Transport (TEN-T) core network. Urban nodes are at the intersection of TEN-T infrastructure and urban infrastructure.

Across a total of six course units, it covers topics including the legal framework and policy context of urban nodes and TENT, a methodology for doing so, and the "why" and "what" of the integration.

CIVITAS webinars

On Tuesday 19th November 2019, the H2020 project CoEXist and Civitas held a joint webinar on automation-ready transport modelling tools. The speakers addressed the question: How to include Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) in traffic flow and transport demand simulations?

The overall aim of CoEXist is to prepare the transition phase during which automated and conventional vehicles will co-exist on cities’ roads and to make local authorities “automation-ready”.

CoEXist defines the concept of “automation-readiness” as: “The capability of making structured and informed decisions about the deployment of CAVs in a mixed road environment.”

The webinar guides the audience through the new functionalities of the automation-ready modelling tools to understand the benefits of such functionalities.

It is explained how automated vehicles could be modelled at a microscopic scale the operation of CAVs in platoons as well as at the macroscopic level, including the impacts of CAVs on transport demand and traffic time performance.

Monitoring and evaluation activities deliver data about the progress of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) development process and the impact of policy measures. This course explores how to determine the context for monitoring and evaluation and develop a Monitoring and Evaluation Plan. It looks at selecting indicators and targets and provides insights into evaluating planning processes using, for example, the SUMP Self-Assessment Scheme. By the end of this course, you will have gained comprehensive knowledge about how to establish clear and effective monitoring and evaluation procedures.

Involving stakeholders and the public is a precondition for sustainable urban mobility and supports the development of a more effective, efficient and accepted Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP). This course gives an overview about the relevance of participation in SUMP preparation and provides insights into managing participatory transport planning, identifying stakeholders and working with interested parties, the public and the media. It explores how to select appropriate involvement formats and looks at the practical work of conducting a participation process. Development of effective measures to tackle identified transport and mobility objectives is vital for successful sustainable urban mobility planning. Yet there are a range of challenges to well-informed development of packages of measures. Cities can limit themselves to pre-conceived solutions, may focus on supply-side rather than demand-side polices, and can be unaware of the potential of novel solutions. This course explores measure selection in SUMP process, examining how measures and measure packages can be identified and critically evaluated as a response to objectives, problems, and as part of a process of moving towards more sustainable mobility practices.

Institutional cooperation comprises collaboration and joint working within and across organisations in order to develop and implement a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP). Institutional relationships are various and thus cooperation must be understood as occurring within networks of organisations. Such cooperation may require the sharing of objectives, knowledge, resources, powers or consent between several actors. This course intends to explain how to build a pragmatic cooperation with actors and how to identify ideas, principles and policies that help to deliver a SUMP that is accepted and effective in practical and financial terms.

CIVITAS thematic course

This e-course provides information about recent developments in urban Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and traffic management. In doing so, the e-course is intended to provide support to professionals in preparation and implementation of traffic management policies and prepare an initial selection of measure types suitable for their situation. ITS and traffic management applications help cities to achieve policy goals with regard to accessibility, liveability and safety. Accelerated by technology and ICT developments, the possibilities of using ITS and traffic management in urban environments have increased substantially in the past decade.
