We dare to

To mark the launch of the CIVITAS e-publication "We dare to", an online peer-to-peer exchange event was organised. It featured the seven cities in the e-publication presenting their mobility measures in an interactive format. Six breakout rooms served as informal forums for discussing the measures with their respective cities.

Aachen and Madrid presented on e-mobility and public transport electrification; Bratislava and Sarajevo on public space re-allocation and tactical urbanism; Rethymno, Helsinki and Madrid smart solutions and smart planning; Aachen and Szeged on green mobility strategies with private companies; Bratislava, Sarajevo and Helsinki on boosting cycling with shared bicycle and cargo bike schemes; and Madrid and Rethymno on active modes and vulnerable road users.

Parking is beautiful, but the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Parking policies combine the ability to unlock opportunities for accessing the city, manage space and bring revenue to the city’s accounts.

This webinar will showcase new evolutions in parking, and will help cities and regions take parking policies one step further.

This webinar is moderated by Ivo Cré. Featured speakers are:

  • Oscar Rodrigues (EMEL, Lisbon)
  • Bastiaan Pigge (City of Rotterdam)
  • Rodney Stiles (Populus)

The webinar was organised by Polis in cooperation with the CIVITAS Park4SUMP project.

CIVITAS SUNRISE e-learning material

What is co-creation, and how can it be used to begin transforming our neighbourhoods into more vibrant, livable spaces for all people who live, move, shop, attend schools, relax in them?

From 2-30 September 2019, the European project CIVITAS SUNRISE offered an interactive, self-paced e-course for practitioners in city administrations, who wanted to initiate and coordinate a co-creative process in one of their neighbourhoods.

Participants had the opportunity to learn directly from SUNRISE’s experts, who walked them through the co-creation process, highlighting the tools and strategies that have been applied in the six SUNRISE Action Neighbourhoods in Bremen (DE), Budapest (HU), Jerusalem (IL), Malmö (SE), Southend-on-Sea (UK) and Thessaloniki (GR).

A series of exercises guided participants through the process of creating their own, locally specific co-creation action plan for a neighbourhood of their choice. They were also able to discuss with other e-course participants through an interactive forum under the moderation of SUNRISE experts.

The e-course was free of charge and the seven units are now available here:

GECKO webinars

This webinar from the GECKO project looked at e-scooter regulation, with presentations by Marco Lietz from Circ, providing the operator perspective, and Michael Glotz-Richter from the City of Bremen, providing the city perspective. Both points of view highlighted the mutual importance of open dialogue between cities and e-scooter operators to determine what is feasible and how e-scooters can provide a solution for local issues.

The presentation from Marco Lietz addressed how the industry has evolved as both the number of riders and the number of cities with e-scooters have expanded. A focus on safety, harmony with other modes, and integration with local infrastructure are important factors to ensuring the sustainability of e-scooters in cities.

Michael’s presentation of Bremen’s thoroughly-considered approach to the introduction of e-scooters to the city indicates that regulations such as a limited number of scooters, no-parking zones, and no-riding zones are useful, and that prior cycle-friendliness in a city helps facilitate a smooth integration of these new two-wheeled vehicles.

Based on the high level of interest and number of questions and comments from the audience, it is clear that the discussion of e-scooter regulations is far from over.

CIVITAS SUMPs-Up eCourses

Measure selection and packaging are highly important parts of the overall process of developing a SUMP. Mobility policies and measures are at the heart of the planning approach of sustainable urban mobility planning.

The fourth SUMPs-Up e-course will help planners and decision makers consider where to start the measures selection process and gives advice how to determine the baseline by reviewing already existing measures as well as the current status of the transport system.

The course will also recommend methods to thin out a long list of measures to address city’s vision and targets.  After completing this lesson, now you should know the basis of measure selection in a SUMP context as well as some assessment methods to structure your measure selection.

CIVITAS SUMPs-Up eCourses

Many cities struggle with implementing their SUMP. This course explains the foundations of how planning authorities can overcome the barriers and how action planning is key to achieve this.

It also helps planners and decision describe and gain approval for selected measures and break the measures into actions and plan the implementation in more detail. The course will also address other crucial success factor in the SUMP process – monitoring and evaluation.

Monitoring and evaluation both the of the planning process and the measure implementation are crucial to the effectiveness of a SUMP.

Lastly, the course will give tips for managing the implementation process to ensure good coordination among all parties involved.
