Life in the city relies on the smooth operation of urban logistics. Everything from retail to services, construction to waste collection rely on an efficient and reliable freight transport system. However, with the increasing pressures of urbanization, this has to be balanced with the environmental and social impacts caused by transport activity. This is the challenge of City Logistics, a field of study that has significant practical implications for the world and the cities we live in. It is not merely a question of what is involved, but what can be done about urban freight transport to improve it for the sake of economic efficiency, quality of life, and sustainability. From a systematic scientific foundation of the field, this course will take you on a journey to learn how city logistics is understood and practiced in cities around the world. Our instructors, members of a renowned global expert network, will teach you the basics of this highly complex social system. Using their experience in real-world projects, they will illustrate how the knowledge learnt in this course is applied across industry and the public sector. This course caters primarily to university students or professionals working in urban transport infrastructure planning or logistics management. Whether you are simply curious about the topic or you intend to develop a career in these fields, this course will give you the tools you need to understand the complexities of urban freight transport systems. The FREVUE project organises its first technical webinar on Friday 17 March 2017, from 11.00 to 12.00 (CET). The FREVUE partner SINTEF will present during this webinar the main results of a study on the technical assessment of electric vehicles used for daily logistics operations. The presentation will be complemented by testimonies of two local FREVUE partners: EMEL (in Lisbon) and Breytner (in Rotterdam).

The delivery of goods makes up a significant share of traffic in European cities and is a major contributor to deteriorating air quality, rising carbon emissions and congestion. CIVITAS cities encourage the use of cleaner freight vehicles and are developing solutions to better coordinate freight logistics. More efficient freight deliveries can reduce congestion, lower emissions and free up space for sustainable modes.

Freight distribution is a vital part of life in modern cities and plays a relevant role within the whole urban mobility system. But, among the different components of mobility, urban freight logistics had and sometimes continue to have less emphasis in city policies and thus failing to contribute to the reduction of its negative impacts on urban liveability, like noise, pollution, congestion and reduced road safety. In order to support policy makers and urban mobility practitioners, the CIVITAS WIKI project recently released the Policy Note ‘Making urban freight logistics more sustainable’ which condensates successful approaches and solutions particularly addressed to small and medium-sized European cities. This free webinar has presented and discussed in a comprehensive way the outcomes of the Policy Note offering also an insight on some selected measures. One concrete experience from the CIVITAS city of Almada (PT) on how to plan and develop an efficient and sustainable urban freight logistics system has also been presented, together with the new CIVITAS Freight Cluster established for a better coordination of urban freight projects at urban level.

The ultimate goal being to decrease the flows of commercial road vehicles without increasing other flows like consumer car flows, to decrease commercial vehicles’ emissions and to prevent traffic congestion caused by vans and lorries double-parking during delivery. SOLUTIONS will look at policy options for public authorities to achieve these goals, including regulations (traffic restriction, low emissions zones), transport pricing and taxes, transport planning and the development of infrastructure dedicated to urban freight (lorry lanes, delivery and loading spaces, urban consolidation centres). Public authorities and private operators, both of whom have an interest in improving their vehicle fuel efficiency, consolidating of urban freight, and improving the efficiency of deliveries, have to work together to define the best urban freight schemes.
