SUITS Webinars

The SUITS webinar "on data management and exploitation for sustainable urban mobility", will advocate crowdsourcing as a sustainable and low-cost method to acquire mobility data and it will present a data modeling approach to minimise traffic delays. The webinar will also discuss approaches to effectively handle the potential for "big data" that may result from the proposed data collection methodologies.

Developing public policy for SUMP implementation, that balances the needs of citizen mobility with urban freight logistics and land-use conflicts, requires extensive traffic data collection and traffic monitoring. Only through the close and continuous monitoring of such a complex system (in a sustainable way) can this system be improved and the effectiveness of public policies be properly assessed.

This webinar will present tools and methodologies for the collection, modeling, management and exploitation of urban mobility data that can maximise the effectiveness and sustainability of urban transport measures and policies. The webinar is targeted at local authorities (mainly transport and mobility departments), as well as researchers and other stakeholders, whose work focuses on urban mobility planning, optimisation and policy-making.

The webinar will be moderated by Frederic Rudolph, project coordinator at the Wuppertal Institute. Speakers are:

  • Dr. Fotis Liotopoulos, Computer Engineer and General Manager of SBOING.
  • Dr. Liotopoulos will present a web-based tool for the selection and extraction of global user mobility traces (GPX files) from a database of over half a million traces. The tool, is a web platform for real-time and historical urban traffic monitoring. The results of a pilot implementation of urban traffic monitoring through crowdsourcing, using, in the city of Kalamaria (Greece).
  • Dr. Miriam Pirra, Researcher at Politecnico di Torino will provide concrete examples of how it is possible to exploit data collected using such tools at the municipality level. She will focus on the results of a pilot study in the city of Turin to show benefits and applicability of the data collection tools in the development of transport measures in European cities.
  • Mr. Csaba Matrahazi, Software Developer at LogDrill Ltd., Hungary is doing research and development projects by providing R&D background and documentation mainly in SCRUM. His main technologies are HTML5, CSS, JS, PHP, Python, C#, Git, GitHub, and Jira.

When we want to change behaviour, targeted messages that appeal to the individual will have more effect than a one-fits-all approach. In this webinar, we will give a brief overview of the benefits of and techniques for setting up targeted campaigns for specific segments of people. The city of Utrecht, the Netherlands, will present their experiences with their successful campaign developed within the SEGMENT project. SEGMENT experimented with two types of segmentation techniques: (1) Targeting consumers undergoing ‘life change moments’ which causes them to question and reconsider their travel habits. (2) Clustering these consumers (using detailed questionnaires) into relatively homogenous groups (in terms of their attitudes towards car use, cycling, electric vehicles or wider issues such as climate change and health etc.) and then devising bespoke campaigns.
