SUMPs-Up City Webinar Presentations

In the latest webinar from the CIVITAS SUMPs-Up city webinar series, the city of Donostia-San Sebastian in Spain discusses the development and implementation of its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP).

The process of changing the mobility culture in the city started 25 years ago, and has been met with opposition along the way. Through engagement and innovative measures, however, this has been overcome.

Donostia-San Sebastian is one of the SUMPs-Up city partners.

Sharing Cities Webinar Series

Sharing Cities and CIVITAS TRACE projects have organised a joint webinar on experiences related to mobility. Both projects work with this topic from different angles, providing a good opportunity to share and learn. EUROCITIES hosted the webinar as replication lead of Sharing Cities with speakers from the Energy Agency of Plovdiv (TRACE) and CEiiA (Sharing Cities) on 2 February 2018 from 11:00 to 12:45. The webinar was on behavioural change to ensure a greater effectiveness and acceptance by citizens of new mobility measures.
 

Ina Karova, from the Energy Agency of Plovdiv, presented the TRACE project which develops ICT-based tracking tools to optimise the planning and implementation of walking and cycling policies; all tools are accompanied by campaigns for their procurement. TRACE will end in May 2018 and has therefore already produced some valuable information that will be shared with you.

The lead partner in TRACE is the Technical University of Lisboa, which can also support the city of Lisbon in implementing those new solutions.

Carolina Carli from CEiiA presented the status of mobility measures in Lisbon, one of the lighthouse cities within Sharing Cities, highlighting the use cases which aim to change behaviours.

Gender and Urban Transport

Many people recognize transport as gender neutral – though in fact, it´s not! Gender is a transversal dimension of social life and impacts travel behaviour, patterns, needs and accesses. Women and men have different pre-conditions, needs and restrictions for using transport. This has to be taken into consideration for all transport planning and projects to adequately meet the demand and to assure that transport is efficient and sustainable.

This webinar explores how gender issues pursue sustainable urban mobility in very practical terms. Participants learn about gender considerations in transport planning, design and operation and will hear about safety and security aspects in transportation.

Research conducted over the last few decades in many western countries confirms that there is a mutually reinforcing relationship between transport poverty (i.e. lack of access to both private and public mobility resources) and social exclusion (inability to fully participate in life-enhancing activities).

In these contexts, households that do not own cars are overwhelmingly concentrated in the lowest income quintiles, where approximately only half of households own cars. For low income households with cars, mobility is still reduced -- they make significantly fewer trips and travel much shorter distances than their higher-income, car-owning counterparts.

The experience of reduced mobility often means that low income households are unable to fully participate in key activities, such as employment, education, health care and food shopping. It is perhaps for these reasons that car ownership among low-income households in the UK has increased more rapidly year on year than for other income brackets. Yet this statistical trend tells us very little about the actual motivations behind why people living on or near ‘the breadline’ (i.e. in poverty) are willing to commit so much of their limited financial resources to owning and running a private vehicle. They do so even when they find it difficult to afford other basic necessities, such as food, warmth, shelter and clothing. Much of transportation policy is based on the idea that low-income people do not own cars. Yet a growing body of evidence suggests that this is no longer the case.

What does the experience of low-income car ownership mean for our work in transportation, and what lessons learned from other western countries can help guide our efforts here in Canada? Join transportation expert Karen Lucas as she explores these issues and discusses the ‘auto motives’ of low-income populations, by drawing on case study evidence from different geographical and social contexts over the last 20 yrs.

Cycling has the capability to contribute substantially to livable cities. It has seen a massive boost in popularity all over the world during the last years. This has mainly been due to grass-roots initiatives, spreading a bicycle culture to places that used to be dominated by cars - with powerful impact: The “Bike Revolution” is shaping cities with their action and pushes urban and transport planners to consider their needs in future development. This local Engagement becomes more and more important on a global agenda as well. In October, Habitat-III will take place in Quito. The New Urban Agenda (NUA), the outcome document of the conference, has the ambition to set out universal guidelines for forward-looking urban development. Hence, embedding bicycle culture in the NUA is crucial to establish and underline its importance for sustainable mobility in cities worldwide. In the webinar JP Amaral (Bike Anjo, Brazil), and Ksenia Semenova (Kyiv Cyclists’ Association, Ukraine, and vice-president of the European Cyclists Federation) highlight the experiences of the bike revolutions in their cities and countries. Furthermore, Marcio Deslandes (European Cyclists Federation) will demonstrate how the HABITAT-III process is linked to this local engagement and present their work on the role of cycling in the New Urban Agenda.

Bicycles are an increasingly popular mode of transport in cities around the developing and developed world alike. However, many cities do not have sufficient technical tools or knowledge to develop comprehensive plans to increase safety and convenience for users of this vehicle. However, many kilometres of cycling infrastructure have been added to cities (not only) in European and Latin American cities, turning those cities from pioneers in cycling development in their countries into true cycling cities. In this webinar, Alejandra Leal (México City), Georgios Kontos (Regional Planning authority region Frankfurt-RheinMain), Carlos Pardo (Bogotá) present different approaches to comprehensively develop cycling as a mode of transport. Subsequently, we will discuss the key elements of cycle-inclusive planning and implementation.

Eurotech has over 10 years of experience in providing people counting devices for a wide variety of applications all over the world. The purpose of this webinar is to discuss the motivation and benefits of counting people and highlight typical and unusual applications.

Knowing how many people are in, have entered or have used a facility is interesting to most organisations and innovative companies can now transform this information into knowledge that improves their competitive advantage.

The ability to combine these people counts with other relevant information enriches knowledge allowing better decisions to be made. Optimisation of services based on real usage, whether that is bus routes or cleaning rotas, can improve customer satisfaction and reduce cost.

Having both real time access to this information and historical trend analysis allows further enhancements with dynamic updates that can be delivered to personnel and customers. Imagine being able to advise your customers that the next train to London is full, but the one five minutes later is empty; better still send them a discount voucher for the coffee shop while they wait if a service is oversubscribed. Alternatively, knowing that a large number of people have just entered a department within a retail store would allow the manager to deploy more staff to serve them; thus increasing sales and customer satisfaction without hiring more staff. The real time effect of merchandising changes or in store promotions can also be monitored and adjusted accordingly.
