When considering the quality of urban mobility decisions, most CIVITAS cities involve a wide range of stakeholders in the measure development process. Through consultations, local communities are empowered and get a sense of ownership of results. At the same time, the level of interaction between decision makers and the target of their decisions is substantially increased, thus enhancing measure completeness, giving stakeholders a better understanding of the planned mobility measures and reducing later opposition to urban mobility. Involving the public has added value, but where to start? In this e-course we explain what public involvement is and why you should involve the public and stakeholders. Step by step, we show you an approach for public participation, including evaluation. After completing this e-course, you will be able to design your own participation process.

They are implemented to improve the quality of life in towns and cities. Often ‘soft measures’ to improve the situation can only go so far, and UVARs are needed in combination with the soft measures.

Gamification takes the data-driven techniques that game designers use to engage players, and applies them to non-game experiences to motivate actions that add value to your business.” Gamification is used in more and more in the transport sector to influence choice behaviour.

This e-course provides information about recent developments in urban Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and traffic management. In doing so, the e-course is intended to provide support to professionals in preparation and implementation of traffic management policies and prepare an initial selection of measure types suitable for their situation. ITS and traffic management applications help cities to achieve policy goals with regard to accessibility, liveability and safety. Accelerated by technology and ICT developments, the possibilities of using ITS and traffic management in urban environments have increased substantially in the past decade.

Speaker: Thomas Stokell (Love to Ride): How we can apply behaviour change theory to get more people riding bicycles? Thomas Stokell is social marketer with more than 12 years’ experience designing behavior change programs specifically to promote cycling. He ran National Bike Week in New Zealand for 5 years before moving to the UK in 2007 where he established Love to Ride - the online platform that encourages more people to ride bicycles. Thomas will present their behaviour change framework and describe how cities and advocacy groups can apply a number of different behaviour change theories to encourage cycling. A description of how the Love to Ride online platform has been designed to incorporate behaviour change theory will also be given along with a case study of the Workplace Cycle Challenge programme.
