GECKO webinars

This webinar from the GECKO project looked at e-scooter regulation, with presentations by Marco Lietz from Circ, providing the operator perspective, and Michael Glotz-Richter from the City of Bremen, providing the city perspective. Both points of view highlighted the mutual importance of open dialogue between cities and e-scooter operators to determine what is feasible and how e-scooters can provide a solution for local issues.

The presentation from Marco Lietz addressed how the industry has evolved as both the number of riders and the number of cities with e-scooters have expanded. A focus on safety, harmony with other modes, and integration with local infrastructure are important factors to ensuring the sustainability of e-scooters in cities.

Michael’s presentation of Bremen’s thoroughly-considered approach to the introduction of e-scooters to the city indicates that regulations such as a limited number of scooters, no-parking zones, and no-riding zones are useful, and that prior cycle-friendliness in a city helps facilitate a smooth integration of these new two-wheeled vehicles.

Based on the high level of interest and number of questions and comments from the audience, it is clear that the discussion of e-scooter regulations is far from over.

Meeting of the Minds

Parking is a particularly tough issue for cities across the globe. Municipalities, both large and small, face the challenge of balancing the needs of a range of stakeholders - residents, tourists, pedestrians, businesses, schools, and others - who all have different parking demands. The city of Bad Hersfeld, Germany, sought to change how it handles traffic for both residents and visitors, particularly during special events.

A small city of approximately 30,000 just outside of Frankurt, Bad Hersfield is well known for its festivals, particularly the Bad Hersfelder Festspiele. The city's Mayor, Thomas Fehling, implemented a more streamlined approach to parking management with the help of smart parking IoT solutions.

In this webinar, Mayor Fehling will share how the city deployed this new technology, which reduced the amount of time drivers searched for parking, lessened congestion on the roadways, lowered emissions, and increased efficiencies across its open-air parking lots. He will be joined by Thomas Hohenacker, Cleverciti Systems CEO, who will share some of his key insights from his work deploying parking solutions across cities in the Middle East, Europe and the US.Less

Orchestrated mobility: Mobile app solutions for seamless travel

How can smart mobile apps prepare you for the future, create seamless passenger experiences, and provide opportunities for new sources of revenue?

In this webinar, Axon Vibe discussed how they are working with SBB and others to prepare for the future of travel. By creating seamless passenger experiences through travel assistance, multimodal connections, door to door mobility and passive ticketing, they can significantly increase passenger satisfaction. But they can also increase operational efficiency, by reducing peak loads, identify under served areas and prepare for future network expansions. And lastly, they will monetise your customer base for you by connecting them to ancillary services based on their predicted needs.

CIVITAS thematic course

There are over 500 urban vehicle access regulations (UVARs) in Europe, controlling entry of vehicles to an area of a town or city. They are implemented to improve the quality of life in towns and cities. Often ‘soft measures’ to improve the situation can only go so far, and UVARs are needed in combination with the soft measures.

“Gamification is the process of taking something that already exists - a website, an enterprise application, an online community - and integrating game mechanics into it to motivate participation, engagement, and loyalty. Gamification takes the data-driven techniques that game designers use to engage players, and applies them to non-game experiences to motivate actions that add value to your business.” Gamification is used in more and more in the transport sector to influence choice behaviour.

SUTP Webinar

Number plate restrictions are an easy, low-cost, short-term measure that has been adopted in various cities around the world with the aim to reduce congestion and air pollution. However, their medium and long-term impacts have been widely debated. The webinar focused on the rationale of plate restrictions, the types of restrictions that have been adopted, and the difficulty to know the actual effects of these measures. Carlosfelipe Pardo (Despacio) provided insights on the experience of Bogotá and other cities worldwide.

CIVITAS thematic course

This e-course provides information about recent developments in urban Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and traffic management. In doing so, the e-course is intended to provide support to professionals in preparation and implementation of traffic management policies and prepare an initial selection of measure types suitable for their situation. ITS and traffic management applications help cities to achieve policy goals with regard to accessibility, liveability and safety. Accelerated by technology and ICT developments, the possibilities of using ITS and traffic management in urban environments have increased substantially in the past decade.
