This EU-funded mobility project offers training courses to help companies develop innovative solutions that can reduce congestion in cities. The FLOW project aims to tackle urban congestion by developing walking and cycling measures. Its training courses are for companies, such as app developers and consultancies, that provide products and services related to urban transport, urban planning, walking and cycling and/or reducing urban road congestion. The training consists of interactive e-learning modules and webinars that introduce new products developed by FLOW partners, such as software that analyses traffic, provides forecasts, and manages data from geographic information systems. Companies that take part in the training will feature in an online catalogue that FLOW will present to European local authorities - opening doors to new contacts and potential clients.

Today, many trips that are carried out using conventional cars could be done by light electric vehicles (LEVs). This would make urban transport much more sustainable. Emissions would “evaporate”, congestion would be reduced, transport would become safer, quieter and cheaper and public health would improve. Overall, replacement of car trips by LEV trips would make our cities much more liveable.

While there are many ways to improve and extend sustainable public transport in cities throughout the world, this webinar will explore two of them: bus rapid transit (BRT) and clean vehicles. Corresponding technology, cost-efficiency issues and relevant examples will be discussed. Methods for identifying a city’s long-term public transport needs and developing feasible measures to meet these needs will also be introduced.

Many cities strive for a cleaner vehicle fleet, whether the aim is to improve the municipal fleet (including public transport vehicles) or to encourage residents to choose alternatively fuelled or electric vehicles over conventionally fuelled vehicles. This interactive webinar will provide an introduction to electric vehicles (EVs) as well as guidance on how to increase the use of EVs in urban environments. Options on fostering EV deployment and examples from cities around the world will be discussed.

The overall mission of SOLUTIONS is to support the uptake of innovative sustainable urban mobility solutions in Europe and other regions in the world, in particular in Asia, Latin America and the Mediterranean. The project addresses urban mobility solutions around six thematic clusters: public transport, transport infrastructure, city logistics, integrated planning/SUMP, network and mobility management and clean vehicles. This course addresses the field of clean vehicles and focuses on electric vehicles in particular.

SOLUTIONS will look at clean vehicles to consider readily available fuels, technologies, and energy-efficient options that offer substantial greenhouse gas emission reductions potential. The suitability of different option of clean vehicle technology depends not only on the local circumstances, but also on the national framework. The measures and solutions selected will cover a spectrum of technology options and vehicle categories to offer clean vehicle solutions to the variety of cities in the different regions. Important considerations will be the prerequisites for the application of different technologies and fuels, their feasibility in the local framework and the side effects that might be associated with their application. By building on experiences gained by other cities as fostered in the SOLUTIONS project, municipalities can reduce the risk of implementating clean vehicle technology, by determining potential investment costs and possible side effects. With regards to CO2 emitted by energy consumption, SOLUTIONS will take into account the full life cycle and Well-to-Wheel phase to ensure sustainability of the solutions suggested.

The SOLUTIONS project addresses a range of measures in the Cluster 2 Transport Infrastructures. The main focus of the cluster and this e-learning course is present summarized information and recommendations about design of urban streets (sharing of road space) and the design for the cycling infrastructure improving the safety of infrastructure.

The transport sector currently accounts for about 6.7 Gigatonnes of CO2, which is equivalent to 23% of all energy related Greenhouse Gas emissions and is set to double by 2050 if current trends persist, in particular in emerging economies (IPCC 2014). Setting the transport sector on a low-carbon development pathway is essential for global climate change mitigation efforts that aim to stabilise global warming at 2 Degrees Celsius, which is the internationally agreed target under the United Nations Framework Conventions on Climate Change (UNFCCC). To contribute to this target developed countries will have to rapidly decarbonise their transport sector over the coming decades (-80% by 2050) and developing and emerging countries will have to curb growth (+70% by 2050), which will require substantial policy action at all levels of government (IEA 2014). Together with Oliver Lah (Wuppertal Institute) we explore the pathways for low-carbon transport and provide an overview on key policy measures at the local and national level.
