CIVITAS SUITS e-courses

Course Overview

This course is designed to build and/or strengthen the capacity of small-medium cities’ Local Authorities to facing current challenges when implementing innovative transport schemes, i.e car-sharing, ridesharing (carpooling – vanpooling), bike – sharing, MaaS etc.

Who is this course for?

The course is aimed mainly at transport planners in local authorities of small and medium sized cities. Other interested individuals are also welcome, e.g. from consultancies or recent graduates.

Overall aim of the course

To increase the capacity of S-M cities, to implement and monitor the Innovative Transport Schemes (InnoTS) measures throughout policymaking, budgeting, designing and facing the current challenges when implementing these measures.

Specific objectives of the course

Increasing the understanding about the value of InnoTS in our cities, the effects/cost of lack of urban mobility regulations, the operators and the economy of the city, the stakeholders involved and their needs and about the concept and methodology for implementing InnoTS measures while being able to recognise or find out the needs of urban freight transport users.

Building specific skills regarding how success of the measures can be ensured

  • By convincing stakeholders and by overcoming financial, legal, administrative and technical barriers

Specifically, the course is designed to:

  • Strengthen cooperation between LA’s staff

  • Advance local priorities on InnoTS

  • Offer concrete practical tools and guidance to better implement these Schemes

SPICE project webinars

SPICE is an EU-financed coordination and support action, which aims to bring together public procurers to share information and assist them in using procurement as a tool to implement innovative transport and mobility solutions. Our aim has been not only to collect the best practices, but also share them and, in turn, improve public procurement throughout Europe.

To this end, the SPICE consortium organised a series of workshops and webinars. In this final webinar, the SPICE team will disclose the key findings of the project.

CIVITAS SUITS E-Courses

This course on public procurement, innovative financing methods and business models is targeted at decision makers in cities. 

The course aims to elaborate on public procurement practices and identify methods that are used by cities to finance sustainable transport projects. 

The course instructors will also share their experience on innovative business models that enable cities to bring together various stakeholders in implementing sustainable transport. 

This course will be held both as a self-paced version with webinars and online conferences where participants will have an opportunity to directly interact with the instructors.

The course is being offered as part of the CIVITAS SUITS project.

EIP-SCC Sustainable Urban Mobility Action Cluster Webinar

Are you interested in smart mobility? Would you like to know more about 5 European initiatives that roll out new, smarter and sustainable solutions in European cities?

The EIP-SCC Sustainable Urban Mobility Action Cluster (EIP-SCC SUM AC) is pleased to invite you to a webinar taking place on-line on 20th June 2018, from 13:00 to 14:30 CET.

This webinar will give you the opportunity to hear about the cities and companies that are leading 5 actions as part of the European Innovation Partnership in Smart cities and communities. Their aim is to become the leading platform for understanding city needs, for bringing stakeholders together, building the tools that support an innovation pipeline, and directly supporting individual networks and projects that are en-route to realisation.

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Action Cluster focuses on five Initiatives:

  • Urban Air Mobility (UAM) – lead by Airbus, it aims to  contribute to bringing urban mobility into the third dimension – the airspace (flying vehicles)– by offering a marketplace-driven forum of diverse mobility stakeholders (ground and air) to jointly work towards city-centric demonstration projects at intra-city and inter-city (regional) level;
  • Intelligent Mobility For Energy Transition (IMET) – lead by Nissan, it aims to create a mechanism for the development of sustainable energy models through e-mobility solutions as an innovative product for the development of smart cities;
  • New Mobility Services (NMS) – lead by the Province of Noord-Brabant/ Brabanstad, it aims to build a common ground for New Mobility Services, supporting service replication and cooperation between cities and private sector;
  • E-Vehicles for Smart Cities and Communities (EV4SCC) – lead by Urban Foresight, it is mobilising a Europe-wide dialogue on the potential for electric vehicles to be integrated with smart city initiatives and aims to create the world’s largest marketplace for smart electric mobility solutions;
  • Alternative Fuels Special Vehicles (AFSV) – lead by Aebi-Schmidt, it aims to create a guideline that draws on the very latest and most appropriate technologies to recommend to cities to help steer a clear path in order to achieve the zero emission target in the field of special vehicles.

ELIPTIC Webinar Series

Simulation tools help public authorities in the planning of e-bus systems and electrification of their fleets. They are an integral part of the work in the use cases of Pillar A “Safe integration of e-Buses using existing electric public transport infrastructure” of the ELIPTIC project. After a short introduction into the work of the ELIPTIC project and the use cases related to the webinar’s topic, the presenters from the research organisations RWTH Aachen, Fraunhofer IVI and Vrije Universiteit Brussel showed different aspects of simulation that help in the planning of e-buses. This included the presentation of a software-based approach to find the optimal technical configuration for the use of e-buses on different routes by Fabian Meishner, RWTH Aachen. These calculations are a helpful tool to build sound business cases for the long-term use of electric bus systems. An example was also given of the results of a vehicle simulation-based feasibility study of converting a Diesel bus line with hybrid trolleybuses (by extending the existing trolleybus line) in a rural area in the East of Germany (Dr.-Ing Thoralf Knote, Fraunhofer IVI). Hybrid trolleybuses have an on-board energy storage which enables a fully electric operation without catenaries. Finally, the webinar addressed design questions and charging strategies for e-buses, exemplified in the case of Brussels (Prof. Dr. Omar Hegazy, Vrije Universiteit Brussel).

FREVUE

The FREVUE project organises its first technical webinar on Friday 17 March 2017, from 11.00 to 12.00 (CET). The FREVUE partner SINTEF will present during this webinar the main results of a study on the technical assessment of electric vehicles used for daily logistics operations. The presentation will be complemented by testimonies of two local FREVUE partners: EMEL (in Lisbon) and Breytner (in Rotterdam).

    ELIPTIC webinar series

    Braking energy recovery technologies are an opportunity to increase the energy efficiency in public transport systems like metro, light rail/tram or trolleybus networks and will be presented during this first webinar of the ELIPTIC project (link is external). Different technologies in this field are part of the work in the use cases of Pillar B “Innovative energy storage systems to increase operational efficiency” of the ELIPTIC project. After a short introduction into the work of the ELIPTIC project and the objectives and use cases related to the webinar’s topic, the presenters from the public transport companies STIB (Brussels, Belgium) and PKT (Gdynia, Poland) will show braking energy recovery technologies for metro (and how to transfer the approach to light rail) and trolleybus systems. They will explain their development background from the European projects Ticket to Kyoto (NWE Interreg) and CIVITAS-DYN@MO, and show experiences with their systems in operation as well as results in terms of increased operational efficiency through these systems. Furthermore, they will present how their current braking energy recovery approaches and technologies will be developed further in the ELIPTIC use cases.

    SUTP Webinar

    The amount and quality of energy (in particular fossil fuels) consumed by motorised vehicles is not only a burden to our atmosphere, but also generates airborne pollutants like sulphur, nitrogen oxides or carbon monoxide - to name a few. Those pollutants have severe impacts on our environment and our health - particularly in heavily populated urban areas. The Avoid-Shift-Improve (ASI)-approach helps to counteract air pollution. While it is necessary to plan traffic in a smart way and shift it to more clean modes of transport, fuel economy, vehicle and fuel standards are essential to further reduce and limit air pollution. While air pollution is still a serious problem, the introduction of EURO-standards for fuel as well as vehicle taxation, emission standards and technologic solutions lead to a significant reduction of air pollution in European cities.

    CIVITAS

    Freight distribution is a vital part of life in modern cities and plays a relevant role within the whole urban mobility system. But, among the different components of mobility, urban freight logistics had and sometimes continue to have less emphasis in city policies and thus failing to contribute to the reduction of its negative impacts on urban liveability, like noise, pollution, congestion and reduced road safety. In order to support policy makers and urban mobility practitioners, the CIVITAS WIKI project recently released the Policy Note ‘Making urban freight logistics more sustainable’ which condensates successful approaches and solutions particularly addressed to small and medium-sized European cities. This free webinar has presented and discussed in a comprehensive way the outcomes of the Policy Note offering also an insight on some selected measures. One concrete experience from the CIVITAS city of Almada (PT) on how to plan and develop an efficient and sustainable urban freight logistics system has also been presented, together with the new CIVITAS Freight Cluster established for a better coordination of urban freight projects at urban level.
