edestrians First is a tool for understanding, evaluation, and empowerment.
  • Describing what matters for walkability helps you understand why some places are walkable while others aren’t. Indicators help you evaluate how walkable your city is and how it could be improved. Policy recommendations guide you to take steps to make your city more walkable.

  • Pedestrians First aims to be comprehensive. Walkability is complex. For a city to be walkable, it has to be designed for walking at all levels, from the sidewalk to the regional plan. By dividing these levels into four complementary tools that can be used separately or together, Pedestrians First offers a comprehensive suite for understanding and measuring everything about walkability. The tools, however, do have certain limitations.

  • Pedestrians First is global. The four tools were designed in consultation with experts around the world, who helped us design them to respond to different contexts.

  • Pedestrians First can be quantitative or qualitative. You can use these tools to measure walkability numerically. That means you can see progress over time and compare streets, neighborhoods, and cities in different places. You can also use them as a form of qualitative guidance to dive deeper into the behavioral barriers and levels of walkability in your city.

  • Pedestrians First is simple enough that nonexperts can use it quickly, but it’s also detailed enough to be useful for professionals.
