Until May 2011 there were no zero emissions vehicles operating in the inner city of Monza, so the city introduced a pilot scheme to gain best practice examples from other cities. The initiative aims to contribute towards reducing the environmental impact of Public Transport fleet in the city, especially  PM10. The bus was launched during the ARCHIMEDES Consortium Meeting, held in Monza from 9 - 12 May, and, after some technical adjustments, it will start to run regularly on the “historical” line of Monza, the Z206, in June 2011.

The specification study was completed in April 2010, following market research the Municipality chose an IVECO Citelis Hybrid bus, whose technical characteristics are suitable for the city of Monza. The bus is very efficient and has a Diesel engine Tector 6 EEV (a last generation engine), that allows high energy storage with state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries. Furthermore, it has a Stop & Start function for additional fuel saving, and reduces noise and pollution. It is foreseen that the introduction of the hybrid bus can reduce up to 30% of fuel consumption, 25% of CO2 emissions and 50% of NOx emissions. The bus will circulate on the line Z206 because this line connects two big mobility attractors (the University and the Hospital), and covers a path (the ARCHIMEDES Corridor) where different ARCHIMEDES measures are concentrated.
