Preston , SUCCESS

The demand responsive transport service has been officially launched. Flexi Link, which operates in the South Ribble area, was launched with a new vehicle at the Commercial Transport Museum in Leyland on 20 March. The service has already been running successfully since September 2007, using an alternative vehicle, with 400 passengers travelling a month.

Residents who do not have access to a car or cannot use public transport easily; either through mobility problems or no suitable service being available are now offered a flexible, door-to-door service to access local amenities. By booking in advance over the phone, people are able to travel for leisure, shopping, visiting, employment, medical appointments, getting to and from an interview and for social and educational activities etc. The service was officially launched by County Councillor Matthew Tomlinson (Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation), and County Councillor Jean Yates, in addition to other local dignitaries. Users of the service, along with officers from the CIVITAS project in Preston and South Ribble, were also present at the event. The venue was the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland, which is dedicated to preserving the history of the road transport industry in the United Kingdom. One of Britain’s most important heritage collections, the unique display of historic commercial vehicles and buses spanning a century of truck and bus building provided an excellent setting for the launch of this new service.
