The Baltic Sea Region Competence Centre on SUMP, established within the CIVITAS DYN@MO project, brings together the knowledge and good examples of sustainable urban mobility planning in the Baltic Sea Region.

Transport planning systems vary from country to country but cities in the Baltic Sea region, most of them being small and medium sized, also face similar challenges when it comes to implementation of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).

The aim of the competence centre is to assist cities in developing their SUMPs by:

  • providing information and support
  • supporting the exchange of knowledge and experiences
  • offering training on the SUMP process

The Good Examples database, documents containing SUMP-related cases from the region, is one of the key services provided by the competence centre. As part of the online platform, a separate section in Polish has been dedicated to Polish cities who wish to evolve from traditional transport plans towards SUMPs.

In addition, the competence centre organises training and events on SUMPs. The next conference "Baltic Sea Region advancing towards sustainable urban mobility planning" will take place in Gdynia (Poland) on 23-24th October 2014. Gdynia is a forerunner in the development of SUMPs in Poland and can serve as an example to other cities. The city is currently preparing a next-generation mobility plan in cooperation with a variety of stakeholders – the Gdynia SUMP, which will be adopted as a legally binding document.

The services of the competence centre are targeted at both: cities already familiar with SUMPs and willing to improve and adjust them to the changing requirements and cities only starting with SUMP preparation

The competence centre is led by the University of Gdansk, supported by the Union of the Baltic Cities Commissions on Environment and Transport and the City of Gdynia.
