The Cycling City Aalborg initiative that was launched in 2009, gets an economic boost of an additional €1.3 million over the next three years.

As part of the CIVITAS ARCHIMEDES project, the City of Aalborg developed a high classed commuter cycling route between the city centre and the university. The main principles of the cycling motorway have also become the cornerstones of the Cycling City Aalborg initiative: free flowing traffic, safety and visibility. The cycling initiative thereby extends the benefits of the commuter cycling route to the rest of the city - and the new funding will enable the initiative to carry out more of its ideas. The money will be used for establishing high classed commuter travel routes on two stretches in the city and establishing cycle paths to the cities largest industrial area. The funding has been granted by the Danish Road Directorate based on an agreement between the Danish national government and parties in the national parliament. A condition of  the grant requires the City of Aalborg to raise its own financial contribution to the project to 60 percent. In 2009, the City of Aalborg was granted €0.9 million for the first phase of the Cycling City Aalborg initiative that ran from 2010-2012. Between 2009 and 2014, the funding scheme provides a total of €130 million to enhance cycling. In this round, a total of €20 million are granted to projects in Denmark. The Danish Minster for Transport, Henrik Dam Kristensen says in a press release, "We are continuing the work of enhancing cycling in Denmark to benefit both the environment and public health"
