Children from five city schools had a ‘Golden’ reason to walk to school last month - they were in with a chance of winning the coveted Golden Flip Flop award!

The children were taking part in a competition organised by Brighton & Hove City Council to encourage them to walk to school.During the last half term, year 3 pupils (7-8 years old) from St Martin’s Primary, Coldean Primary, Coombe Road Primary, Fairlight Primary and St Bartholomew’s Primary Schools competed for the Golden Flip Flop Trophy. All children walking to school were awarded Golden Flip Flop stickers, the journeys were counted and the class with the highest number won the Golden Flip-Flop Trophy - the only one of its kind in the world! The winning class, from Coldean Primary School, will be presented with the engraved trophy at a special school assembly on 9 November by Councillor Vanessa Brown, Cabinet member for Children and Young People.“I’m delighted to be presenting the trophy to the children from Coldean Primary who have made a huge effort to walk to school” said Cllr Brown.“The Golden Flip Flop award is an educational and creative project, which has resulted in many families changing the way they travel to and from school each day. Many thanks to all who have taken part.“Fun projects like these support and encourage children and their families to be active and healthy as well as reducing congestion near schools.”The competition was launched following a successful trial run in three schools last year. The project has been jointly funded as part of the council’s School-Travel Initiative and the EU CIVITAS (City-Vitality-Sustainability) Initiative. Terry Nye, Cycle Training Coordinator within the council’s Road Safety Team, was on hand throughout the competition to provide encouragement to all children to walk as much as possible. The council hopes to expand the scheme to cover more schools in the future.
