Stockholm Cityscape

Stockholm (Sweden)

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden and the largest city in the Nordic countries, is growing fast. It’s in the transmission from a medium-sized city surrounded by ten small municipalities to a plus-one-million city, in a three million metropolitan area, while the road network and public transport infrastructure is dimensioned on the earlier situation. Stockholm’s living lab is Årsta and Stockholm City Centre. Årsta is a rapidly growing district in southern Stockholm. Årsta lacks access to the underground but there are busses, tram and a commuter train.

Stockholm aims for urban mobility in which walking, cycling and public transport is complemented by shared mobility and other services. By 2030, the City wants at least 50% of local journeys to take place on foot, an emission-free inner city, and to achieve a fossil fuel free city organisation; by 2040, the City aims for a fossil fuel free city. Electrification is an important challenge to address within this transition.
