Having a dependable, cost-effective service is key to high-quality public transport. To guarantee and gauge this reliability, comprehensive data collection and service monitoring is necessary.

With summer bus services a recent addition to public transport on Elba, the current need for this is great on the Italian island. That is where the new Celso fleet monitoring system comes in.

Developed by MemEx, a consortium partner in the DESTINATIONS project, Celso will be tested on Elba island this coming summer as part of the project.

It works through an app with an easy-to-use driver interface that can be operated using devices such as smartphones and tables. As it does not require on-board installation, Celso's implementation and operating costs are also lower compared to standard monitoring systems.

The system will be trialled on summer bus services in the island's two largest municipalities, Rio Marina and Portoferraio.

Data will be collected on various factors, including the departure and arrival time of services from terminals and stops en route, the distance travelled by vehicles, service punctuality, speed, trip duration,  and the time drivers spend behind the wheel.

Analysing this information will allow enable public officials in the municipalities to assess whether the services are meeting performance expectations and offering value for money. This process will also feed into future transport policy development on Elba.
