The Mobility as a Service (MaaS) concept is very new to Ruse (Bulgaria), one of the five Living Labs in CIVITAS ECCENTRIC. Yet through the project, it is slowly being integrated into the city’s transport system.

Currently, only a few MaaS-related services are available. An internet portal and mobile app providing information about public transport services in the city, such as the timetables and route information of Ruse’s bus and trolleybus lines.

In addition, a journey planner allows people to navigate the city easily using public transport, which makes travelling with it more convenient and desirable.

However, younger people and visitors to the city are looking for further functionalities and demanding additional options to be able to buy and validate tickets for public transport.

Thus, Ruse decided to develop and integrate a unified system to enable the purchase and validation of transport tickets via mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets. This is expected to increase the use of public transport by 10% and its reliability by 15%!

Initially, this mobile ticketing app will be usable on the city’s trolleybus network. At a later stage, it will be introduced for all public transport operators in the municipality. The mobile app will be available on all major operating systems, whilst ensuring the distribution, sale, validation and checking of tickets in trolleybuses and buses operating around Ruse.

The electronic payment system will be a combination of technical devices and a software application; these will both be linked to the city’s Public Transport Control and Management Centre. The app’s interface will provide information in Bulgarian and English.

Payment will be possible using debit and/or credit cards, with cashless payment options also available (Paypal at a minimum). Finally, the mobile app will enable users to provide feedback  on services via ‘passenger assessment’ forms.
