At the beginning of April, brand new minibuses were introduced into the public transport fleet in Klaipėda (Lithuania), one of the five CIVITAS PORTIS cities. A new e-ticketing system will also be utilised on the vehicles.

Upon boarding the minibuses, all travel cards will be scanned and the required amount of money for the trip deducted from the user's card. In addition, it is possible to pay for multiple passengers using the same card .

The option to purchase a paper ticket remains, but these will look different. A QR code on the paper tickets will be scanned and validated by the same terminals as the travel cards.

April 2018 marks the first roll-out phase of the e-ticketing system, with this expected to be completed by October 2018.

The switch to the fully electronic system will also enable Klaipėda's public transport authority to collect more detailed passenger and journey information, such as trip length, the frequency of journeys, and to what extent vehicle capacity is filled.

Advances have also been made in adapting the vehicles to the needs of different user groups. More space has been allocated within the minibuses for people with reduced mobility and parents with prams, whilst the e-ticket scanners will be located in the same place on all minibuses to ease travel for people with visual impairments.

Passengers' user experience will also be improved by the displaying of real-time travel information via a series of screens, such as the route number and journey progress.

Vytautas Grubliauskas, the Mayor of Klaipėda, comment that "Klaipėda's public transport system continues to be an example for the whole of Lithuania. The quality of service of our minibuses continues to increase – passengers are offered a new level of comfort, new payment methods and updated routes".
