Gent presents first online bicycle route planner

CIVITAS Initiative

The City of Gent has been getting a lot of press attention following the launch of a brand new unique online bicycle route planner. From 3 September, cyclists can determine their personal route and even include a number of personal preferences. They also have the possibility to avoid tram tracks or cobblestones.

The Gent route planner calculates the most recommended route from point A to point B and starts from the existing bicycle network. Up until now this network was only available on paper, it can now be consulted at www.gentfietst.be. The Gent route planner offers more than existing ones. You can plan a route from point A to B, but you can also determine more than two points. The route planner will not always give you the shortest route, but the safest and most bicycle-friendly one. Users can also add preferences that can make cycling easier (e.g. no hills) or more pleasant (e.g. no tram tracks). Users can also add bicycle services (shops, racks, etc.) and other points of interest (monuments, schools, etc.) to the map. From spring 2011 onwards other features will be added to the online route planner, such as the possibility to export it to your GPS. On top of that, the route planner will be available in English.
