Prague, Sofia

CIVITAS has launched its first work placement in Prague as part of the 2017 CIVITAS peer-exchange programme for transport practitioners from across Europe.

From 2-4 October, representatives from Sofia visited Prague, where they spent three days together with their Czech colleagues gaining first-hand experience on various public transport measures implemented by the city in recent years.

Prague has made huge steps in coordinating activities among public transport authorities, resulting in the more uniform implementation of transport measures. The city's strategic transport plan, approved last year, has contributed to this significantly.

Site visits gave participants the opportunity to discover how measures for buses and tramways have shortened waiting times for the public, even during peak hours. Sofia is preparing similar measures and the visit served as a chance to evaluate the transferability of these measures, both technically and in terms of legislation.

Interactive sessions on e-buses and the modernisation of tram infrastructure allowed Sofia's experts to exchange knowledge and experience with their counterparts from a city that has a lot to teach in how to boost sustainable mobility and reduce car congestion.

"For the City of Prague, the CIVITAS work placement meant an opportunity to rethink our approaches and concepts. During the discussions, we received a feedback to our concrete transport solutions”, said Jaroslav Mach, the head of the Transport Development Unit of the City of Prague. Prague understood that the study visit also provides a learning opportunity for the host city.
