Athens welcomes the arrival of 140 new electric buses

metaCCAZE _Athens welcomes new electric buses

As part of the metaCCAZE project, the Athens Urban Transport Organisation (OASA) has purchased its first fleet of 140 low-emission and fully electric buses. These slow-charging buses are being integrated into the existing bus fleet, while a network of chargers is being set up. With a range of 185 km, these buses can cover a large portion of daily routes. Of the total number of electric buses purchased, approximately 60 are already in daily operation, providing a cleaner and more efficient mode of transport for residents and visitors.

Recently, the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), which is supporting the city and OASA in this process, visited one of four terminals that host the electric buses. During their visit, they received data from OSY, the bus operator, took a short ride on the new buses, and toured the repair facilities.

Optimising scheduling and charging Infrastructure

NTUA will develop state-of-art AI-based algorithms to assist OASA in creating optimal schedules for the new buses. This work will also support the planning of charging times and the identification of the types, number, and locations of chargers.

More about metaCCAZE follower city: Athens

Athens is one of the ten Mission cities that are participating the metaCCAZE project. Together, the cities will test the potential of zero-emission shared mobility solutions in real and diverse urban environments. In Athens, three partner organisations, namely NTUA, OASA, and ANAPLASSIS, the state agency, are collaborating to support the integration of electric mobility, and thereby also working towards the city's 2030 climate neutrality goals.

During the project's second phase, which will start in 2025, metaCCAZE partners will introduce 100 e-buses to the city's network. By 2026-2027, a total of 525 slow and fast-charging stations will be established.
