Airborne Imaging System on Zagreb Corridor

CIVITAS Initiative

The University of Zagreb (ZOFT) arranged a helicopter flight above the selected CIVITAS ELAN corridor in Zagreb. During the flight data on traffic flow performances and images of the corridor were taken. This will ensure accurate traffic modeling and a sound evaluation of activities. The helicopter was equipped with a multi sensor imaging system containing GPS unit, RGB camera (Red-Green-Blue), thermo-vision camera and infra-red camera.

The first test-flight was conducted on 21 March 2009. Initial analysis of video images shows that data for several indicators: number of vehicles, average vehicle speed, traffic flow speed etc. can be collected. As said before, these data, along with geo referenced digital video system and corridor maps, will be used for traffic modeling (VISUM/VISIM). Traffic modeling and simulation will then give us opportunity to test several scenarios.ZFOT will prepare a short presentation of this ‘’Airborne imaging system’’ for the Project Management Meeting that will take place in Zagreb in April 2009.
