Toll - emission zoning of the city

The City of Brno will carry out a study which will illustrate where the creation of emission zonesis recommended in order to reduce emissions and where these are above permitted levels. This will result in better living conditions. This study will form the basis for a plan to reduce emissions. At the end of the project Brno will measure the emissions and the municipality will be able to evaluate the impact of the project.

Implementing sustainable mobility

A new legislation in the Czech Republic known as 'emission zones', which enables creating zones to restrict transit of vehicles within municipality, was recently ratified. The city of Brno faces similar problems with air quality as in many other European cities, particularly where a large number of cars produces a lot of emissions. Emission zoning could be one way to eliminate undesirable traffic, mainly cars that produce high levels of air pollutants.

Objectives

  • To increase funding for construction and repairs of the traffic infrastructure, including improvements in mass transportation
  • To reduce emissions, noise and another negative effects caused by traffic
  • To improve road transportation accessibility, to reduce congestion in certain parts of the city, as well as to redefine transport options and schedules
  • To create a sample toll system through a pilot project

This measure will contain a study which will verify the feasibility of implementing the emission zone strategy in Brno. It will evaluate costs, efficiency of the system and effectiveness. Longitudinal data on air quality in the city will be measured within the study.

 

How did the measure progress?

This measure is a follow-up to Measure 3 – Optimising city centre supply. After the finalisation of the logistic study and approval by the city authority the municipality will be able to start working on the measure.

 

What were the outcomes of the measure?

Expected outcomes:

  • Elimination of the enormous stress and pollution caused by the individual motorised transport in the central part of the city (traffic reduction)
  • Improvements in the modal split in favour of public transport
  • Improved access to the central part of the city
