Many people recognize transport as gender neutral – though in fact, it´s not! Gender is a transversal dimension of social life and impacts travel behaviour, patterns, needs and accesses. Women and men have different pre-conditions, needs and restrictions for using transport. This has to be taken into consideration for all transport planning and projects to adequately meet the demand and to assure that transport is efficient and sustainable.
This webinar explores how gender issues pursue sustainable urban mobility in very practical terms. Participants learn about gender considerations in transport planning, design and operation and will hear about safety and security aspects in transportation.

Following the recent call for a cycling strategy from the Luxembourg Presidency of the European Council, the European Parliament and the Committee of the Regions, a new policy report prepared by the European Transport Safety Council and the intense advocacy work done by the European Cycling Federation, the CIVITAS Thematic Group on Safety and Security gave its contribution to the policy development and kept CIVITAS cities informed and actively involved in this very important topic. This webinar's main objective was to present the new policy developments in cycling and cycling safety and the ongoing actions as well as allowing the thematic group members and the overall CIVITAS community to bring their concrete local contributions and experiences on board. It contained two presentations (1) Safe Cycling - How Europe Can Contribute? (2) Why do cyclists feel safe in Gdansk?

How can a city promote active travel for school children? By giving them safe routes to school and promoting those routes. In order for this to work, cities should cooperate very closely with teachers, parents and other stakeholders. On 26 January the province of Granada and the city of Malaga presented the lessons learned from their safe routes to school programmes. With the support of the CIVITAS Activity Fund, the provincial authority of Granada founded the Work Group for Child Mobility. The group was comprised of technicians and political members of the city councils, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders of those municipalities interested in the implementation of the Safe Routes to School programme. They organised several workshops in 8 municipalities. The city of Malaga is working with 10 schools, and they implement different routes for pedestrians and cyclists. It is a participative project where they involve the entire school community. In addition they are supporting an app to facilitate the coordination with families.
