Creativity, culture and bikes have always lived happily together. The City Hall of Gdansk, the national leader in cycling infrastructure is keen to promote cycling in the city, as well as making it easier and more enjoyable for citizens to actually cycle. Gdansk City together with CIVITAS MIMOSA and Gdansk 2016 Team teamed up to organise an open competition to design a bicycle stand for cultural institutions such as museums, theatres and libraries.

With over 100 entries, the winning Cultural Bike Stand was recently announced at the start of June as the ‘Infinity Bike Stand’. Shaped in the figure eight, the bike stand will be made out of steel with a closed square profile and covered with rubber to protect bike frames. Each stand will accommodate four bikes. Designed by Tomasz Rasiak and Justyna Osiecka from Lodz, the ‘Infinity Bike Stand’ was inspired by the moto ‘Freedom of Culture, Culture of Freedom’. The City Hall of Gdansk and CIVITAS MIMOSA are determined that riding a bicycle is not only seen as a seasonal alternative to the conventional means of public transport but actually generates a shift in thinking about mobility in the city and eco-friendly lifestyle for the Tri-City inhabitants. The organisers of the competition enjoyed working with the creative industry and public and look forward to future collaboration on ‘City Mobility Furniture’ to ensure successful long-term implementation of this measure along with other related measures.
