Safety and Security measures in CIVITAS Plus cities (2008-2012): FACTS & FIGURES

Safety and security are core components of sustainable urban mobility and primary areas of action within the CIVITAS Initiative as they make sustainable transport options feasible and attractive. Emphasis is placed on making roads safer and giving vulnerable road users a greater sense of security. CIVITAS Plus cities took actions in this area looking into new ways to ensure the safety of urban travellers, especially cyclists, pedestrians and vulnerable groups such as children and elderly people. Measures implemented focused on safer roads, cycle paths and footpaths; speed reductions; improvements to road safety through cycling and walking; safety improvements in public transport and enhancing passenger security.
