Ingolstadt demonstrates a modal split of 53 percent motorized personal transport, 9 percent public transport, 19 percent bicycle transport and 19 percent pedestrians.
Its strategic approach to transport management will soon be defined by a transport policy. This will result in a sustainable urban transport plan, the main targets of which will include a rise in the percentage of public transport within the modal split, and a new focus on traffic management, especially in line with the mitigation of environmental impacts and the demand for GHG reduction.
Achievements to date include the introduction of innovative technologies in public transport, such as a cleaner bus fleet, as well as in traffic management. In 2008, the project TRAVOLUTION (the application of the BALANCE adaptive urban traffic control system and the successful field testing of car-to-infrastructure communication with the aim of optimizing urban traffic flow and reducing delays and emissions) was successfully completed. Challenges include coping with a growing population and with increasing transport demands in the context of economic crises and the need to comply with ecological standards. Future plans include the development of an intermodal travel information system with a particular focus on peak-time traffic management.
Ingolstadt is working on the implementation of sustainable urban transport measures in cooperation with various private enterprises, the Technical University of Munich and Audi AG.
