Improved infrastructure for collective transport

Ploiesti

Building a user-friendly public transport service is an effective way of maintaining passenger numbers and ensuring a modal shift away from the private car.

Implementing sustainable mobility

Prior to measure implementation, Ploiesti had no special infrastructure facilities in key transfer areas and no cycle parking facilities at transport interchanges. The public transport system was also characterised by poor information provision and poor access. The objectives of the measure were therefore to:

  • reduce, or even reverse, the decline in the overall usage of public transport services;
  • provide an efficient and affordable means of transport for those unable to use private transport; and
  • encourage the use of public transport in order to tackle congestion and improve the environment.

How did the measure progress?

Activities were implemented by Ploiesti City Hall and the local public transport company RATPP. They included:

  • a review of existing public transport services, identifying relevant service improvements;
  • the construction of new shelters at 10 bus stops with good lighting, protection from the weather, good signage and information provision, and facilities accessible to elderly and disabled passengers;
  • improvements to bus station facilities with the installation of real-time passenger information panels and city maps; and
  • the installation of bike parking facilities at 10 key interchanges.

What were the outcomes of the measure?

The quality of public transport infrastructure was improved at the 10 targeted interchanges. Real-time information displays were installed, giving passengers accurate information about bus arrival times.
